Designing for a blind lifestyle (a survey) (self.Blind)
submitted by designeduser
Hi! My name is Binh and I am an Industrial Design student at The University Of Illinois At Chicago. I am currently doing research for a project that I am working on to design an object that can help facilitate the lifestyle of blind people. I have formulated a survey to give me some insights into what it's like to be blind on a daily basis.

Hope to read all of your responses soon! Thanks!

My husband answered the questionnaire. I will add that he doesn’t know Braille. No place to state that. He tried to learn it but as someone who lost vision later in life and someone who benefited from AI/assistive tech, he has relied on that. He was unable to distinguish the raised Braille dots.

Hello!
Please let your husband know that I appreciate his response and will be adding an option for non braille users. Could you ask him what his thoughts on the current AI/assistive techs are? Are there potential areas of improvement? What he likes and dislikes about it?

I also noticed that your husband wrote down accessibility as his biggest challenge to being blind. I was wondering if you could get him to list to of the things that he finds are not accessible and how he thinks they could be more accessible. For example, what his thoughts are on using a cellphone that is touch screen. Would he prefer one brand over another?

Accessibilty can take countless forms. Do you mean just technology?

Re: cell phones. He is an apple user as they build accessibility in for all. He often has issues when apps are updated or software is updated on his laptop. He uses JAWS at work and runs into glitches on a weekly basis. Right now it doesn’t show him what appointments he has on his outlook calendar.

Many websites are inaccessible or only partially so. From hospitals for him to access his own medical records to cbssports for him to pick games in an office pool.

Try unsubscribing to an email list with your eyes closed ... one click options are rare.

Seems that all websites and apps (including updates) should be tested before they are released.

I've completed the survey.

Hi bradley22!
Thank you for completing my survey!
May I ask you what you thought about it? For example, were there questions that you thought were irrelevant to your daily life?
bradley22 3 points 5y ago
No. I felt that all the questions made sense. There is a spelling mistake in the questions about what is the thing you enjoy doing most in life? The word activities is spelt wrong. In the survey it's spelt like this activites.

Just to let you know there are tuns of apps out there for the IPhone and android devices. For example there's BlindSquare and Nearby Explorer for navigation, Seeing AI for reading text and tuns more.

Alright thanks for letting me know. I will make sure to fix that. I will also look into more of the apps that Apple provides. I have been interested to see how Apple has been able to push accessibility with their designs. Do you have any thoughts on this topic? How they could improve? What you like dislike about what Apple and Android has done towards accessibility?
Also, you said that you would like to be able to play games like Mario Odyssey. Are there Video-games that you find more accessible or more enjoyable, perhaps through sound?

I enjoy let's plays and walkthroughs on youtube. I don't think I have one set of video games that I enjoy more than another. I'm not a huge fan of racing games.

As for accessibility, I really like what Apple has done. The IPhone has changed thousands of blind peoples lives. I'm not sure about Android as i've not used it.
