[Feedback] Anti-veering product: Stria (self.Blind)
submitted 5.3142327031893y ago by slifer227
Hey all, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am looking for some feedback from the blind community regarding a new product that a team I am part of is working on. Stria is a a product designed to prevent veering and uses an MPU 6050 and Arduino Beetle microprocessor to sense changes in direction and alert the user via vibration haptics on either side of the waist. Below is a link to a survey -->

Here is the $1:

One thing you mentioned in your survey was "If you are using Jaws or VoiceOver on a laptop or computer, the area that the mouse is covering will be read out.". Most JAWS users don't use the mouse at all, they can't see it and it is easier to use the keystrokes.

For question 7, you mentioned about replacing the batteries. But you don't mention the cost or what type. If they were standard AA or AAA batteries, that is fairly cheap to replace over 6 months. But if you are replacing CR123s or or lithium-polymer power packs, the cost rises significantly.

Have you guys contacted an Orientation and Mobility Instructor to learn how people with vision loss crosses the street? It may be useful to see how that is done, and some of the techniques used to counter veering (or in some cases, reasons to intentionally veer).

This is a link to the California Association of Orientation and Mobility Specialists. They may be able to put you in touch with an O&M instructor. You can also contact the California School for the Blind (http://www.csb-cde.ca.gov/), but I'm not sure if they can help.
