What happened to the new Perkins Braillers? (self.Blind)
submitted 5.275825199331276y ago by redstone1337
Back in 2009 I read about an update to the old mostly-metal Perkins brailler that was supposed to be cheaper and lighter. I'm looking around at all the usual stores--including Perkins themselves--and don't see it at all. I've seen them out in the wild, but where on earth are they getting them?

There's a "smart brailler" which seems to use most of the design elements form this newer model, but the one I'm thinking of is totally mechanical.

Hey there, I know this was posted a long time ago and your account was deleted. In case this helps you or anyone else I wanted to say that I’m guessing the brailler you were seeing was the APH light-touch version. It requires a lighter touch to press each key. While this version shows up on the product comparison guide on the Perkins website, it is not shown on the products for sale section. Thankfully, this brailler type is being sold on aph.org to this day. Later this month (September 2022) they are supposed to get a new shipment in stock. All the other brailler types are sold on the Perkins website. I hope this helps. Braillers are super cool! I am sighted and wish I could get the smart brailler to aid me in my braille learning journey. Have a good one y’all! :)

I had a red Next Generation Perkins Brailler but it only lasted a year and a half before breaking. I was looking into the Smart Brailler, the one with the screen to help teach you Braille but I was told stay away from them as well as they aren’t made anywhere near as good as the tried , tested and true ‘old’ metal ones. I got a metal one now which is fine!

I was informed they are trying to phase them out because they keep having trouble with them when they always break so they want to try and stop selling them but don’t take my word for it.
