Does anyone have experience with the Kindle Fire 10 inch for low vision folks? (self.Blind)
submitted by mnemonikos82
Good afternoon all, thank you in advance for your responses!

My Dad has recently started to suffer from low vision and so I am replacing his 7" old Kindle Fire (which was dying anyways) with a 10" 7th gen fire. He always really loved crossword puzzles, newspapers, Sudoku, and books. Mostly his vision issues now are that the center of his vision is a dead spot, and everything else seems somewhat out of focus (an air bubble impacted his optical nerve during an unrelated medical emergency). He can see if he holds it close (one of the reasons for a 1080p upgrade), but a big enough font size on a 7" made it so that there were only 15 words on the page at a time and so he couldn't concentrate for all the page turning. He tried my Mom's 10" ipad and liked it, so that's how we got here. The Kindle gets here on Wednesday, so I just want to get a head start on options so he doesn't have to fiddle with it more than he has to. I'm sure some can relate, but my Dad was never a patient man and with these new vision problems, if it doesn't work the first time he gives up kind of easily. Growing older sucks.

I've never owned a Kindle or android tablet, so can some folks make some suggestions for apps that do newspapers, crosswords, or Sudoku in a large print format where the layout works well (rather than just a zoom which would not be effective for the same reasons as the 7" kindle wasn't). Also, are there settings on the Kindle or within the Kindle Reader app (beyond font size, columns, margins, and background color) that I should know about going in?

I also appreciate suggestions audio vision impaired accessibility tools on the device (especially what he can do with Alexa to help him run the device), he's a stubborn man though and refuses to move to audio books (Audible).

Thank you again for your responses!

Well, I've not had the reason to look into accessibility options for the Kindle Fire 7th gen, but I do have an HD 8 inch one. Under the accessibility settings (under settings -> accessibility), there are multiple options. Under the 'Vision Settings' section, it lists a built in screen reader, a screen magnifier, font size selection (goes between 'Normal', 'Large', and 'Huge'), High Contrast Text, color inversion, and color correction.

As for sudoku apps, the first few in the app store look to be decent enough for ease of use, and are free. The first one listed (Sudoku from Brainium Studios LLC), also looks to have customizable text size. Not in the position to install it myself to check it out more in depth, but hope that helps.
