Does anyone here use the app Be My Eyes?(self.Blind)
submitted by GrizzledTheGrizzly
I just learned about it today. It's an app that connects a sighted and a non-sighted person, showing the sighted person whatever is in the view of the non-sighted user's camera. I think it's a fantastic idea. It's used to see where someone dropped an earring, what the expiration date on the milk is, which sweater is the red one, or anything else you might need. Basically all the things I used to do for my buddy before he passed. I signed up today to help people in his memory. He was a huge giver, and made the world a better place. I want to keep that going for him by doing something I did for him. Right now there are seventeen times as many volunteers as users on the app. Eighty six thousand to one million four hundred eighty five thousand. I can provide links if anyone wants.

I use it once or twice a month for help with computer problems or just little things like reading expiration dates. I really appreciate it, and have had nothing but positive interactions with the volunteers. I wish I could leave a note to thank some of the best.

Hey if you ever have trouble finding someone on the app who knows enough about computers, feel free to send me a message here. I don't know how well your computer software lends itself to sending imgur.com (image er) photo links or whatever, but I'd be willing to help. Also, do you find it helpful when people respell weirdly spelled apps to work better with your software? My buddy seemed to like it when I did it texting him. Software might be better at it since he passed though.

I appreciate the offer. There’s no real need to spell things like that, but I don’t think the readers pronounce everything properly anyway. I mostly just get used to it.

I signed up to test it with my father who is legally blind. He can read things with a magnifier lens and the paper an inch from his face. My dad and I only learned of the app a month ago. He has been making do with a point and shoot zoom camera the last 10 years. We only used it once and the volunteer was helpful - she could even read his messy handwritten notes. Dad liked the experience and is open to the concept. I'm currently on the hunt for a smartphone for him now. We thought it might be fun to start every call with "can you help me find my car keys?"... Thanks everyone who volunteers and is waiting patiently for a call.

I use the app as a sighted volunteer, but I never get any calls. I find I'm able to help more people with the app BeSpecular.

I have the app but have never used it. Seems like a useful tool for some and I am happy there are so many volunteers.

Because of the number of volunteers their average connection time is below 30 secs. I'm a sighted volunteer but had to wait a month for my first call

I’ve used it once or twice, not bad. But that’s it. I still live at home at the moment, living out here in Los Angeles county is terrible. I don’t have enough money so, I have enough sighted help around here. But I have used it once or twice to read a book title or a few, but yeah. I should use it more but like I said people around here are more than eager to help in that regard, not so much in others but oh well, right?

I signed up as a volunteer a few months ago. Haven’t gotten a call yet.
