Tool for Converting Between HTML / Text and BRF (self.Blind)
submitted by duplaja
Hello! I just wanted to share a tool I've been working on for someone very dear to me. It's functional now, although I'm sure it'll keep growing as I find more things to add / improve on. There are no ads, no registration required, and it is completely free.

This site lets you upload BRF files and download the file as HTML or TXT, and also upload either of those two to convert to BRF.

The person who inspired this really likes to use BARD for audio books but did not have anything that could read BRF files from there. We looked at options (she's on a mac), and it was either dual boot to use a Windows program, or shell out $700 or so for Duxbury. We found several programs online that would go from TXT to BRF, but not in the reverse direction.

You can find the tool at $1, and it uses the fantastic $1.

Any feedback, comments, or issues are certainly welcome!

*Edit*: Just a note, this does not currently work well on mobile. Due to the restrictions on automatic forced downloading on mobile browsers, the file does not download. (I went this route so I could immediately delete the files once they had converted, to maintain privacy for users).

I bookmarked this and I'll definitely be checking this out later. Glad to see that it exists, though.

Thanks! If you try it out, let me know how it works for you.

I tried it with a braille book's .brf file, and it added single quotes around the whole name, making it .txt' but also all that was in the text was HTML code for like, your header or whatever, explaining the service and how it works.

Thanks for the feedback! If I may ask, which browser + OS did this occur on?

I was on Safari on mac

I really really wanted a tool like this for a very long time, so thanks! Is there a way though to convert it in to .docx or .doc?
duplaja [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Not currently, but I can certainly look in to that!

Can you please? How easy would this be? I would prefer it to be in that format though of course I can convert it myself as long as it’s txt or otherwise, but it would be less work if it could be a conversion to .docx.

Hey! Just wanted to follow up. I've done some testing with this. Unfortunately, in the conversion from brf to text, certain characters are introduced that cause a command line conversion to docx to fail. I'll keep looking at this, but as of now, it has enough issues that I don't feel comfortable releasing until it's ironed out.

Ah, oh my goodness, thanks for even trying or looking in to it! I appreciate it! Well, keep me updated this will be fun, the fact that it is convertable is so awesome. And thanks for bringing this up again, I needed the link. I haven’t got a chance to bookmark it.
