Enucleation of Right Eye (self.Blind)
submitted by coffeeorigami
Hello Everyone!

I have been visually impaired for a long time (23 years) and I vacillate from periods of very good eye sight to periods of total blindness. I’ve had many, many eye surgeries to restore my sight throughout the years. That said, several years ago my right eye began to collapse; my doctors were able to stabilize it for a time. Well, now that time is up. Next week I will have my right eye removed, and will have an ocular prosthetic made. Has anyone here gone through this process? In general, I don’t get too nervous about surgery (I guess I’ve been desensitized over the years) but I must admit I’m a little nervous about this one. I’ve already wrangled a promise from my brother that for Christmas I’d like a vanity contact lens set for my shiny new eye prosthetic (my health condition prevents me from being able to wear contact lenses in my biological eyes) - you know, an all black lens à la 30 Days of Night, a cat’s eye - in general lenses that will come in handy for church or family reunions. All kidding aside, I would be very grateful for any advice or shared experiences you guys might have. Thank you.

Thank you for your support! It does hurt knowing that it’s gotten this far, and that my autoimmune disease (I have Blau Syndrome) has the power to do this to me and my body. On the bright side, I won’t be in a state of constant pain once the surgery is performed and I’m on the mend. It’s been five years since my eye started collapsing. Not to be melodramatic, but every day I wake up to extreme pain in that eye. I take medicine and I manage my pain as best I can, but it’s always there. After the surgery and healing process I won’t have to do that anymore - fight to get through everyday in constant pain. I feel a great sense of relief knowing that - even though right now I am grieving over the loss of my vision and my eye. Sorry if that was TMI - I really appreciate all your kind words and support.

Not trying to be insensitive but serious question: why don't you put a small video camera where your eye would be?

That would be so badass!
