Graphic Designer seeks some insight (self.Blind)
submitted by Dragonoflime
Hello readers/listeners!

I was just presented with an opportunity to help make a logo for a non-profit group that will run a small coffee shop inside a larger facility. The group will be run by employees with vision impairment or who are blind. I have a few questions but any extra ideas or thoughts you have to share will be helpful. Just to be straight forward, I am not being paid by the group by this. Please understand I’m trying to be as thoughtful as I can with wording.

1. No one has mentioned meeting with the business leader, the signs going up are being requested by the larger facility. Should the leader be strongly involved in the design? Or would this be the least of her concerns?

2. I was considering working Braille into the logo, would this be rude or overstepping boundaries? As far as I know the name format is very similar to “Marie’s Cafe”. What about using imagery like glasses or support cane? Let me know what may be taboo or off limits.

3. If I do get to meet with the leader, what should I prepare? Verbal descriptions, large print versions? I was trying to figure out how I could make a cut out or perhaps an image with raised edges to show the outline? I was thinking maybe outline in glue?

4. If I need to check in with the leader what’s the best way to say, “What kind of blind are you?” without sounding like a jackass.

Thank you so much for your consideration and thoughts!

1. Ask her.
2. Cafe imagery is most appropriate (unless she wishes otherwise).
3. Puffy paint.
4. "If you don't mind me asking, what can you see?"

I hope this thread is still relevant, but as a totally blind collaborator who deals with various graphic designers, I find the most helpful are those who can effectively communicate their designs. Be as detailed as you can with what you're presenting or hope to present.

I *loath* large prints, but love digital files. A PDF would be most intuitive for most people, as far as formats go.

Ask for her preference and respect that or bring options.
