After years of ROP and retinal detachment, I'm now half blind. (self.Blind)
submitted by TeaRev1ew
So, my left eye after today is blind and inflammed, has been for a month. We initially assumed bacterial conjunctivitis but two weeks of erythromycin proved to not really do much. I haven't been able to see out of it for around a year and a half but the iris hadn't collapsed in on itself or gotten inflammed until a month ago when it was logistically impossible to see a doctor at a reputable hospital. I'm now officially blind in my left eye, with my right retaining sight. After years of struggling to try and fix my left eye (in the sense that means to keep it sighted), it's gone and I've come to terms with it.

I haven't come to terms with the thought of losing it physically, but the act of sight in that eye I feel has just been a natural progression of deterioration that doesn't seem to be happening at all with my right eye.

Does the iris/pupil being gone mean anything more serious than a loss of sight/irritation? I've never really delved too deeply into my blindness, largely because I've seen it as just a fact of life that hey one of my eyes barely works.

I don’t have any advice, but as someone with ROP I can only imagine how you’re feeling.

Are you able to get in with a retina doctor sometime in the near future to discuss your vision loss and any need for additional care?

I hope you can get some answers soon.

Thursday at 9am. They wanted me to go in later today but my schedule is too packed with classes and work to have something during normal business hours. The doctor I saw today prescribed me an eye drop steroid and antiinflammatory which should work to reduce inflammation in the eye.

It was a struggle this last month, but now at least I've got some kind of closure (or a step towards it) for what happened with my eye.
