What are some activities to do with a blind senior citizen? (self.Blind)
submitted by RedPlanit
I am a student who is studying speech pathology. We have a project for our class that is part of an elder outreach program. We are encouraged to do activities with a senior citizen in an assisted living facility like puzzles or arts and crafts.

The individual I am working with is 88 with limited mobility and macular degeneration. She is fully functioning cognitively and can see limited shapes and colors but that's about it. She is very smart and opinionated and enjoys discussing politics and history. Her hobbies include maintaining an herb garden and reading.

For activities so far, we have had a tea party, gardened, listened to music, and read a book together. We also visited with some animals. The ideas for activities that I had originally planned probably would not work for someone who is blind.

Can you think of any activities that she and I might be able to enjoy together?

I don’t have any suggestions but interested to learn what you come up with. My grandma is losing her sight and it’s getting increasingly more difficult to do fun things with my Mum. She loves puzzles, sudoku and playing games like scrabble and rummikub but can’t really do this anymore.

What sort of things did she like to do before she lost her vision? I know a number of blind knitters.

Does she like chess?

Before she lost her vision she did much of the same stuff she does now. She loved to read and now she listens to books on tape. She loved to travel and has been all over the world. She had a huge herb garden and ran a restaurant with fresh herbs. She still has a huge herb garden but the ladies aren't allowed to cook at this facility. She also ran a tea house at one point in her life which is why we had a tea party. She hasn't lost most of her hobbies besides travelling and cooking.

How about going to a pre- school or kindergarten and taking questions from the children? She might enjoy the innocence of youth.

That’s a great idea but I can’t take her out of the facility unfortunately. My sister is a teacher so I might be able to set up a Skype call with her preschool class.

Or a field trip for a small class?
