TIL that for free, the US Treasury Department provides blind US citizens with a machine to read their currency for them. "The iBill is compact enough to slip into a side pocket. It can identify all US currency," They have also developed free apps to read currency with a smartphone. (afb.org)

As an actual blind person, I appreciate the intent behind what they've done, but a much better solution would be to tactually mark currency. Canada has done this, among other countries. They put a certain number of dots on a bill depending on its denomination.

I agree. We have some of the worst currency in the world. Easier to counterfeit due to limited pigmentation. No variation in size (Euro and Pound) or other ways of marking for visually impaired.

Even in NZ, we had new bills come in as of last yea yet there isn’t any tachtile on it but only on the coins. It’s weird how they never saw the opportunity to do it. I imagine however it will be very expensive for the US to intergratw new bills and maybe this was a solution. I find reading my coins so much a hassle when trying tachtile on coins but I guess I’m just not used to it.

I tried one of these. It's around the size of a tic-tac box. Slip the bill in and push a button. After a second it'll tell you the currency denomination. It takes just long enough that you to never ever ever want to use it in public.

I think I'll stick to my Prime Rewards card for now. Maybe one day the Federal Reserve will get their shit together and add tactile features to the bank notes.
