Sunu Band: November 2 update (self.Blind)
submitted by Laser_Lens_4
Well, good news.

Sunu has sent me a replacement band. They're also in contact with me to fix the issues in the Android app to get more of the controls working.

This band doesn't have the issue of the air bubble but the build quality is still somewhat middling. I hope that the fixes will make this one more worthwhile.

I know I've been fairly negative with Sunu Band but I do think that it does have its use cases where it is genuinely helpful. We'll see where things go. I'll take it for another test run as soon as I can.

Here is my previous update

Edit: Fixed because I was being a negative Nancy. I mean, yeah my outlook on this is still negative but it's not a useless product.

No offense but I think you are being pretty critical over a fairly low cost product. My mom got one and while the build quality isn't stellar, unless you are looking very closely at it, it looks good. Nice soft rubber type plastics.

They sent you a new one and the first thing you do is blast them on Reddit again despite them having good communication with you. You don't even give it another chance and USE the damn thing before your next negative review... At first I was interested to hear your thoughts on it but you clearly have a very negative outlook on this thing without even giving it a chance.

Low cost? Hahahahahahahaha! I wish I had the kind of money you do, where $300 on a sonar watch could be considered cheap. If I'm paying $300 for any hardware, I would expect high build quality as a matter of course. However, that's just not the case in the blindness industry, where everything is poorly built and incredibly overpriced for the value it offers. Maybe if more people complain about this, it'll stop being a fact of life eventually.

If you can find another sonar watch for cheaper let me know where. It's simply in a class of it's own and all brand new electronics come with a premium price. It may go down in the future. Fact is it's still cheaper than my phone and both my parents phones, they are 800+ dollars each. Sure we have enough money to afford it. But with every new technology, the people with money are the ones who get it down in price in the future. And yes the build quality will improve. So if you can't afford it then just don't buy it. I'm sure it'll be even cheaper and better next version

I wrote a few posts about using it daily. I think that it can be a useful tool but it definitely needs work. It's certainly very helpful in some situations. The company support is also good.

Overall I like it but it does have some problems. I'm getting hung up on the build quality because it's fair at best. If they can improve the app and get more of the settings working then I would say that is something that can be overlooked. In any case this was an update and not a review, and fairly subjective. Everyone's mileage will vary when using stuff like this. For me it hasn't been very helpful outside of a few use cases. I'm hoping to get the number of those cases up.

On reading my post I think I may have been a bit more negative than I intended. I'll fix that.

Well I didn't expect you to take my comment well, props for handling it well. Good luck in the future.

Thanks. Your experiences with this have convinced me not to get one. It sounds neat in theory but as with many assistive tech things, it seems to not really work in any practical way.
Hopefully one day something like this will actually work right.

I still think you should try it if that's possible for you. It may be worth it for some activities.
