My open letter to Argus Second Sight (self.Blind)
submitted by DrN00bzLab
Dear Argus team,

Please forward this to development team if at all possible.

My name is Matthew Thorns and I have been following your retinal implant technology since 2013. I created the Nearsighted VR Augmented Aid in 2014 which helped make low vision aids more affordable when compared to the eSight.

I am curious about potential or additional capabilities of the device and the implant itself. I am also interested in sharing concepts & ideas that may further the use of the device and potential improvements. I have not read or seen anything about the following so I thought I should bring them to someones attention & share.

External video output or input: If someone with this device wanted to attempt watching television or a movie could they connect to the video device? Can you currently connect the Argus device to a video output source? For example a computer display or video output like a DVD player with an adapter.

Virtual reality & games: If video output is possible then creating a virtual reality simulation or games is also possible, which could be designed for the Argus devices. This can help with training but also create experiences for the user to enjoy.

Phone adapter Concept: If we could create an android phone adapter that could transmit to the device than the user could not only use a smart phone easier but may also view things like picture, video and possibly even utilize the camera on the phone rather than the camera on the device itself. Obviously conversion to the pixel by pixel constraint would need to be taken into account.

Any information you can provide on current capabilities will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Matthew Thorns

These are some good ideas but the implant is only capable of functional eyesight. It's nowhere near the level to get enough detail to actually read text. It lets you tell where their are objects and enough information to avoid them, but that's it.

>May be more viable in the near future. I understand that the array generally only has a 10 by 6 pixel display monochrome (on/off). Hopefully they will be able to fit more pixels on the array in the near future. However I feel it would be an interesting experiment to have an individual viewing an output from a movie versus staring at a television, or attempting to navigate a virtual reality environment as if they were real objects.

Here is the contact page for Second Sight. The one you want is probably service@secondsight.com, for Customer Service.

already E-mailed them, sharing the E-mail to the public in hope to get people thinking outside the box.
