Low Vision-- Any Thoughts on Galilean loupes? (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
I am low vision (optic atrophy) which makes me leery on coming here since I have a lot of capacities as there is visual acuity. However, with my position I work with detailed things, am constantly bent over, and want to have stuff 20" or about 500mm away instead of 12" 350mm away..

I did a quick experiment with a really cheap magnifier for under $20USD (junk lenses, poor DOF, etc) and it did help me see what I was doing without bringing it up right to my face--which kept dust from grinding, and so forth at bay. However, rapidly I realized the quality is low, and that something better could help me with my work.

Has anyone worked with the loupes or magnifiers that people use in the medical field? How did they work for you when doing detailed tasks? What was the price point?I'm thinking of spending sub $100 on some Chinese imports to see what happens...

One of my coworkers with low vision who deals with fine detail (watch repair and such) uses these.

They come in a variety of strengths, so you can get the ones that match what you need. The website is Canadian, but I'm sure you can find something similar for where you are.

Thanks for the info!
That's similar to my test pair but looks much higher quality. I'll check it out and go from there.

Have you seen a low vision specialist? They can help you try stuff out.

Yes I did in Texas but wound up moving before I went anywhere with that. I may try to see another but I realize the equipment is costly and I doubt I will be as lucky compared to the last time where the Texas Workforce Commission would subsidize.

I do want to tackle the up close work stuff and hope something off the shelf can work. Some Chinese import loupes are sufficient for dental school students, and so if $300 works that would be a nice solution.
I've done a lot without anything but for legit work if it helps I want it and this could be a good thing to try.

I want to do other things but maintaining income and attempting to break the bubble is a good start.
