Requesting Help With Finding A Gift For A Mostly Blind Friend. She Used To Love To Cook, But Has Some Difficulty With Her Hands. (self.Blind)
submitted by wormnyc
As the title says.

I have a much older friend that I used to work with, and we still hang out often. Since the holiday season is coming up, I've been thinking about getting her a couple of gifts.

She has a rare eye disease and is mostly blind. She is sometimes able to very slowly read large text, and it's easiest when it's white text on a black background.

She took an experimental treatment in the 80's that caused her hands to be somewhat paralyzed. She is able to grasp things, but with some difficulty. She's able to push buttons and slowly type, but it's hard, and sometimes impossible, for her to do things like zipping up jackets and buttoning shirts.

We cooked some things together on Wednesday to bring to her friends for Thanksgiving, and she mentioned that she used to love cooking before the issues with her eyes and hands. When we were cooking, I helped her by measuring out the ingredients and putting in/taking things out of the oven.

I was wondering if anyone had resources or ideas for things that could make cooking confidently while she's alone a possibility for her again? I found some sticky dots that we could put on her oven's buttons to help her feel out where to push, but I'm interested in getting more than just that.

Thanks so much!

P.S., she's single if anyone is interested in dating an amazing 70+ year old lady with great taste in music and theater in Manhattan, hahaha!

I have a dump cook book. It's written in large print. All the recipes are full sizes of things so there is no measuring. It's just a box of this and a can of that etc. PM me your address and I can send it to you.

www.blindmicemart.com has a lot and also www.independentliving.com and www.braillesuperstore.com They all have adaptive cooking aids. My BFF who is blind says Braille Superstore is cheaper and has a lot of cooking gadgets for the blind.

Thank you, I looked into this but forgot to respond! I'm definitely getting her something from Braille Superstore.

I'd be a partner in crime, for sure, if only I lived back home.
