Anyone try VR headsets with poor/low vision issues? (self.Blind)
submitted by ghostm42
My father has diabetic retinopathy. He still manages to get around the house and the local streets and even watches television, but he's unable to read and wouldn't be able to recognize me on the streets unless I was within 3 feet from him. His vision has worsened despite medical interventions.

I then came across a post on reddit of an old lady with poor vision being wowed by her experience using a VR headset. She was using visiting places with Google Earth and such. I wondered if VR headsets, like Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus, etc. could help my father.

I looked into it a bit more and heard about Relumino ($1) from Samsung Gear and IrisVision (coincidentally, also with a Samsung Gear VR: $1). I also saw a reddit post here about various apps for the visually impaired available for Google Cardboard.

I was wondering if anyone with vision problems has tried VR headsets and what your experience might have been.

I have, it was cool. It was shockingly normal in a way. I had one thing where I was just 'swimming ' around in an underwater scene and could explore a little bit and see animals and plants.

Just like in real life, if I wanted to see a fish or whatever better I would actually have to get closer to it and look.

Low vision here and I have had some pretty good experiences with VR. I don't know much about how diabetic retinopathy affects vision, but what you described for your father sounds similar to my vision level.

I've had good experiences with Vive and Oculus, and as long as you're sensitive to types of lighting, contrast, or detail issues your father has, you will likely able to find some good game fits. I highly recommend games like Tiltbrush and Sculptr where the user can change the color of their virtual setting and the colors and size of the objects they interact with.

I’ve tried the Samsung VR, and the proper gaming set up (the one like Oculus but not). For me, I couldn’t read, it just came up all hazy. And just like real life, I struggled with detail. But, it was still cool and immersive. And one thing that it does better than real life is no glare.
