Commuting Options for the non-driver (self.Blind)
submitted by Anya_3
I am a visually impaired commuter in NJ who historically has taken the NJ Transit train line from Hoboken to Morris Plains for work (commute time= ~1 hour). Recently the train has been subject to significant delays, inconvenient schedule changes and total cancellations, which do not seem likely to change. I feel helpless as a commuter who doesn't can't drive and am not sure what other options are open to me. I am looking for affordable commuting recommendations (Uber and Lyft are typically ~$40 one way and not really a sustainable option). Please help!

I find myself in your same predicament and I wished I could offer an alternative other than you are not alone.

Anyone near you you could carpool with, even for part of the trip to cut down on the Uber/Lyft? Rideshare also has monthly plans now but that still is hefty considering your distance. Is moving an option?

Unfortunately no, my husband works in the city and living in Hoboken is great because it is so 3asy to get around.

You might just have to budget more time for travel and take the occasional cab if the train isn't working. If that's unsustainable, you might consider a move to Queens. That's where I live and it's a decent commute, plus some really nice neighborhoods. Don't tell anyone else how awesome Queens is, though...

Is paratransit an option? I know they can be pretty awful depending on location, but I'd hope it's at least a cheap option even if it's not always consistent.

try a cab?

That would cost more than Uber/Lyft.

I'm guessing this would be unsustainable for work.
