Confused about blind person I saw today(self.Blind)
submitted by futuramama
I was out walking today and saw someone crossing the street when there was a red light. I then noticed that they were using a cane.

During my time walking behind them, they were moving forward pretty hurriedly, almost bumping into shop signs on the sidewalk several times. Then they crossed a downtown intersection and were angled so wrong that they started crossing diagonally.

Should I have offered help? I remember hearing that blind people will ask for help when they need it and find it offensive/are tired of offers. I also started to question if this was a real blind person—some of their movements seemed so absurd that I was wondering if it was some social experiment type thing. Or, could it have been an intoxicated blind person?

Some blind people make it look easy. Some other people are trying to get to work while listening to 20 emails on their headphones and almost get run over by a truck. Many of us are both of these. I myself was getting cane training today and probably looked like an idiot, and then half an hour later walked out the door without a cane and you wouldn't have known I was blind because I was using my home grown navigation methods. Not all blind people are totally blind, but those with sight can have pretty erratic sight.
So, basically, our shit is complicated.

My best friend only has light perspetion. He left his cane on the bus a few weeks ago, but this dude is going around without it like he's not even blind. It blows my mind. I have low vision and I'm more clumsy, haha.

Love that TLDR... Our shit is complicated. Perfect summation.

Personally, I am never offended when people offer me help. I either accept or say, no thank you. My feeling is that the world would be a better place if we cared more about each other.

That’s a great attitude.

Hey I've done the blind walk home drunk before XD

Could have been someone in a hurry. Could have been someone with poor skills or training. I wouldn't offer help unless they were about to get hit by a car though.

I usually carry a cane around when I WANT people to look at me funny, and ask if I know where I'm going. I usually won't see people around until we're really close, so any tips help! haha Never tried drinking and walking around in any weird places without the wife around!

I do the high walk home A LOT.
Personally I'm not offended if somebody offers me help - in fact, if I'm in a familiar area I'll gladly take it!
