Stargardt's Acquity? (self.Blind)
submitted by stalinprude
Hi! I have Stargardt's Disease and wanted to do a snellen chart test at home. Well, i found it confusing and i was wondering if anyone could tell me sight (20/???) Beings i can see the top line, only barely from 5ft away. I printed out a few reliable ones with varied letters and, yeah.

I'd rather look at an Amsler grid. Mark any changes you notice. I have Best's disease in a mild form so far and that's what I use.

You can't really print one out at home because the size of the letters matter. When you print it, it will make it fit on a page and change the size of the letters, making all the numbers mean nothing. You could buy one. If you do, they are for testing at 10 or 20 feet. The 20/???? number is only accurate at the distance the test is designed for. Lighting also matters. The 20 number is basically saying at 20 feet this is what a typical person could see. If your number is 20/20 then that means you see the same as an average person from 20 feet away. Any second number other than 20 is basically a proportion. So if your number is 20/80 that means you need to be 1/4 of the distance away in order to see the same detail. It's all a little confusing.

That's true. I also have Stargardt and I recommend you to test your Visual Acuity with a doctor.

Vision is made with diferent factors and the Acuity is just one of them. Depending on the level of vision its almost impossible to test by our own, doctors have many types of tests, for differents types of vision and acuity. The Snellen Table is just one mesure.

In Stagardt Disease we lsot the central vision, so we lost the details and some time colors. We also have photophobia, so the best way to real know our visual acuity is to go to a doctor and ask for the test. Remembering each eye sghould be test separatetly and without dialeted pupuils.

My VA is less than 20/400 I to check it, my doctor do not use the Snellen, we use LogMAR.

I would still be leery. If she just printed then it automatically fits to page and changes the size. Even so, lighting makes a big difference too. If everything was perfect, reading the top line of a 20 foot chart from 5 feet away would mean you have 20/800 distance vision. This number could vary a lot though depending on many things. Your doctor will be able to give you better numbers.

Thanks for the explanations! I'm going see my retina specialst next month. I just wanted to try amd ease the sting of the new number I'll be told by trying at home.

That's a smart idea to help prepare yourself. Don't worry too much yet though. That number would mean you would be struggling to read even the largest of print. Does that describe you?
