Seeking advice/support from visually impaired / blind people (self.Blind)
submitted by einarpetersen
Hi there

I am engaged in a project creating comicbooks that can be read by the visually impaired / blind as part of the creation process of regular comics and I am looking for people that may be interested in helping me succeed with that. I hope you would like to get in touch with me to hear more about what I am working with.

I'm interested. Even if there's no pay. This just sounds pretty interesting.

Hi there

I have sent you a message about the current work - there is a lot to digest if you dive in - Once you have poured over the material let me know what you think!

Hi there everyone

My efforts are moving along and I have about 23 pages of another comic book of mine converted into 3D to use as a showcase for the concept.

I realized I could (more quickly than otherwise) create a proof of concept that people can relate to in the convention circuit (plan attending at least ArtBubble in Copenhagen fall 2019) and hopefully a couple in 2020 and in connection with funding this and the continued efforts with Reckoning I've been mulling over how I can better garner financial support for the efforts as I need to pay off modelers to put the finishing touches to the 23 pages I've converted on my own as well as for more models in the future.

I'd love it if you would read through the following and let me know what you think.

Below here I have cut and pasted a description I made that can be used to present potential paid fundraising collaborators.

I am looking for a collaboration partner interested in helping me fundraise this venture that can be of interest to blind people all over the world as the techniques developed can be implemented by other creators helping to start a thriving comic book scene catering for the blind

My name is Einar Petersen and I am in the process of developing a comic book series that can be read by blind. This might sound counter intuitive but hang on a moment!

Utilizing 3D print technology it is possible for me to get the panels on each page to rise up from the flat surface and that means that the comic book can be read with the fingertips but it does not stop there.

All texts are naturally in braille and it is thus possible to read the dialog but on top of that a so called action description page is created that explains in more detail what each image is about and what is happening in the panel.

5 albums are ready in a so called draft mode, this means each panel i drawn and production is now underway of models for each panel, models that can also be printed individually adding a spacial dimension to the reading process.

But Reckoning is about a comic-book apocalypse, it is about breaking free of the mold and lift comic books into the future and hence it is the intent to make Reckoning readable online using haptic technology and there it is possible to take things even further and allow the reader to in full size or at scale to truly feel every nut and bolt, every dent and bend of the models on each panel in full detail.

Currently the work is progressing aided by primarily private people supporting the project on Patreon where they support with an amount going from a dollar and up on a monthly basis. This is done on $1

My thoughts on collaboration fundraising wise is that a sales person could recruit patrons to the project - These can support on patreon or they can support the project directly.

For recruited patrons signing up on Patreon and who stay Patrons longer than 0,5 USD given the recruit stays a Patron for more than 62 days.

in addition I would be willing to for 12 months to pay out an additional bonus of 10% percent of the amount a particulate Patron has signed up for given the Patron stays a Patron for a full 13 months and that the Patron does not ask for a refund as per the money back guarantee I am offering to Patrons.

It may not sound like a lot however nobody says you need to limit yourself to private individuals, companies would be welcome sponsors all they need is a company credit card or ability for making a direct bank transfer and only the ceiling on their card /bank account decides what you could earn in return commission.

For such a corporate sponsor naturally the payout for someone signing up as a sponsor on Patreon this would follow the same pattern as above.

However for a company willing to support directly I would be able to post about their sponsor support and to issue an invoice for sponsor support that they could then deduct according to their local tax code.

The sponsorship would be an annual purchase and non refundable once signed. A sales representative gettig a deal in house would be able to get a 10% royalty on the value of a sponsorship

I would really like to hear your and everyone elses thoughts on this model.

I would prefer the salesperson being someone who understands what it means to be blind and what it would mean to open up accessibility to a media not know for being accessible.

Please let me know what you think

Kind regards

Just a heads up, if you notice the downvotes, it’s because some blind people here treat people who want help to blind people as a threat because it goes against their independance.
einarpetersen [OP] 5 points 4y ago
Not too worried - Some will get it others may not, I am however counting on people being civil and not just downvote to downvote

More like we like to get paid for our time.

Thank you for looking into this - let me know if you'd like me to send you a bit more detailed overview of the project

Absolutely understand - And if I could I definitely would

I would love to get involved if I can. I love comicbook movies and wish I could get into the source materials but I never was so, let me know if I can be of assistance
einarpetersen [OP] 1 points 4y ago
I've sent you an overview of the project - There is some reading to do. Please get back to me after you've studied the materials further!

I’m interested in learning more :)

Hi there - Thanks

I have sent a direct message about my work. Please let me know what you think - Feel free to comment
GrumpyFinn 3 points 4y ago
What kind of payment would we get?
einarpetersen [OP] 2 points 4y ago
Since I am trying to crowdfund the venture and modeling costs eat away all the income (I am out multi 4 digits in USD already) and paying everything out of own pocket and and expect to make the first two albums in tactile format freely downloadable (so anyone can recplicate non profit) there really isn't any way I expect to be able to pay anything more than some token expenses etc. if any are incurred and only according to pre arrangement. So this would be more of a volunteer effort
TheBlindBookLover 2 points 4y ago
Hi. I am interested in your project.
einarpetersen [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Thanks - You should have some reading to do - Let me know what you think
devinprater 1 points 4y ago
I am very interested in the project. I've listened to Comicstorian on Youtube, but that's just not the same as having the full experience of comics and having the story in as much detail as the source, rather than what is probably an abridged summary..
einarpetersen [OP] 2 points 4y ago
Glad to hear - I will send you further information via DM about the project. Cheers

I'm not fully blind (I have a "severe rod/cone dystrophy" -- similar to retinitis pigmentosa), but I'd love to help if I can!

Hi there

I have sent you a PM describing the project in more detail - Do let me know what you think of it and if you can please help spread the word.

Are we talking comics as Marvel & DC, when you say regular comics?

I've never really been into comics, since they've never been accessible as far as I know, unless you can use a CCTV. But this might make me take up reading comics.

Since payment seems to be a concern in this thread I might have a suggestion.

If the testing group is a small one, wouldn't it be possible to at least give out a shoutout to those who has been part of the project, so they can add it as an credential to their resume.

And I'd suggest that you use Patreon to crowdfund, it'l be so easy to thank the people who wants to donate to this cause.

Edit: spelling

Q: Are we talking comics as Marvel & DC, when you say regular comics?

A: More or less, except panels will be 3D printed so that you can get tactile feedback, furthermore all panels are based on 3D models, and each model can be 3D printed separately. The plan is furthermore to create an addendum for each panel with a braille explanation of the panel regarding wht can be felt/seen. Speechbubble texts will naturally be in braille.

Q: Since payment seems to be a concern in this thread I might have a suggestion.

A: I have always tried to make sure anyone actively involved is credited according to their involvement. So yes this would be a given and anyone would be more than welcome to use on their CV.

Q: And I'd suggest that you use Patreon to crowdfund, it'l be so easy to thank the people who wants to donate to this cause.

A: Absolutely agree, in fact you will notice from the material I sent to you I am using a combination of Patreon (long term) and Kickstarter so you are spot on in how this can be funded, it is just a long process and expensive so currently crowdfunding is merely a supplement to cover the production costs, although a welcome supplement.

Looking forward to hear more from you!

Or I should say - In addition to the regular comics panels the 3D panels accessible to the visually impaired as described above are produced
