So... I designed an app that captions photographs using Artificial Intelligence (self.Blind)
submitted by lemmie97
Hello all! I'm not sure whether you guys know about this but there have been great strides in Artificial Intelligence (AI) lately. There are crazy things that I have read about but to normal people like you and me, we hear about it but haven't actually got to experience much of it for ourselves. So when I came across this article about Google's $1, I got really excited. Finally, they are starting to release the technology to the outside world!

I think that this technology has potential but when I looked around, nobody has made this accessible to the general public yet. So I set myself a goal to design an Android app that can make use of this technology. The app is relatively simple but it took me almost half a year to develop a Beta version. I had no idea how to even begin designing an app; I just knew that I wanted to do it. If this app just benefits one person, I'm already satisfied.

Btw, the technology is not perfect. The generated caption for the image is not going to be completely accurate so please only use it as a reference! Besides the caption, there is a confidence level. If the confidence level is high, the description is more likely to be accurate but it is not guaranteed.

Please check out the app - $1 and let me know via email or this post (I'll try to check this post regularly but email is probably better) if you have any questions or feedback! I want to make this app more like a proper photo gallery app but I am only doing this in my spare time (I have university and part-time work) so please be patient. Peace!

Well I also think IOs development can cost you have to do the app store payment. So yeah, maybe you should look at a fundraising goal to see if you can do this for IOs?

Peace to you too! Thank you so much for developing this app and making a difference.

Can we have an iOS version? The majority of blind folk use iOS because of Apple's commitment to accessibility and ease of use.

Android's great too, but your market is primarily iOS.

Unfortunately, Apple has made development for iOS relatively complicated as development cannot be done on a Windows computer. I will need to have a Mac computer and an iPhone to be able to develop/test the app and for a broke student such as myself, I cannot afford either of these devices. If someone is willing to donate, I'm willing to put the effort in but otherwise, it will be difficult. Sorry :(

That's definitely understandable. But we want you to continue to develop the app so keep at it! And when I switch to Android in the (hopefully near) future I look forward to using it. :-)
