I can't tell you how many times I've seen a question directed at people who are blind on /r/askreddit and people who are totally clueless that a blind person might use Reddit give smart-ass answers. So infuriating.

You're so funny kid.

Yeah I have had that come up. I am legally, but not totally, blind. I tell people that and they are like "how can you text?"

I remember looking in a mirror at a restaurant and some guy startled me by yelling “gotcha! You can see!” This whole thread is frustrating.
Wafflez131 points4y ago
Did you say anything back? Were you with anyone?Just what happened?Im sorry this just sounds like a very interesting story but also sounds like this guy was very annoying.
matt_may2 points4y ago
I got a bit short with him. I said something like “stop hassling me for using the little vision I have.” Think he was surprised when I pushed back on him and he left. I probably should have been calmer and more rational. I’m not always a good ambassador for the VIP community.

Good thing you said something though to stand for yourself.

yeah don't really know what else to say other than complete and utter ignorance by people. It doesn't help that some folks fake the emotional support animal thing.

No it doesn’t. It’s really frustrating.
HDMILex3 points4y ago
People are ignorant as fuck. Only two things to do are educate the folk who want to learn or ignore them.
saharacanuck [OP]4 points4y ago
Yeah. The problem is when you don’t actually notice them making comments under their breath because you can’t see them...

Read this article a few days ago and it pissed me off. My partner is blind and attached to his phone. He knows how to use his phone better than most sighted people we know. What's horrible is that I've run into blind/VI who assume they can't use phones or computers and refuse to believe otherwise. They're just cutting themselves off from half the world, basically.

Hi. Though some may see it as obnoxious, I tend to increase the volume on my iPhone in public places for this reason. Mind you, my phone is not screaming at maximum volume, but people standing close enough would be able to grasp the idea of a screen reader if they got curious.

Well, it’s not that I mind but I have been frequenting a few non-blind related subs lately. And I’ve rehashed basically how I use a smart phone to a number of people. I’ve told them even where they could find voice over. Haha! It’s like go look for it if you’d like. But this is how I do it. Blah blah blah.

I have saved pieces of text that I can copy and paste when I want to answer a question that is commonly asked. I also keep cards with some responses in my dog's pack. That way I don't need to use my spoons answering the same question over and over.
estj3171 points4y ago
That’s a good idea, just type it out once. I mean I don’t mind doing it, I am a fast typer but it can be repetitive.

You can write up an FAQ for your life. Start handing it out to the kids who stare too much.

Haha! It would be lengthy haha! But okay that’s an interesting idea.
