Emoji Keyboard (self.Blind)
submitted by kliktone98
hi friends,

i'd like to know if it's easy for you to use the emoji on the iOS keyboard.

Yes, it's fairly easy. I switch over to the keyboard, turn Typing Mode to standard typing so I have to double-tap to actually type an emoji character, then hunt through the tabs of options or just go through my list of the ones I've used the most. It's usable, but a slow process when trying to hunt for funny ones or just the right one for the occasion, especially with so many available now. At least they are all described well and have alt text.

Yeah, it’s easy to use, I have it, and I have used it but don’t use it too much, I just type normal words. Seem more normal to me hahaha! Just not a big fan of it. Emojis seem sort of pointless when you can say as much with words.

Actually, there is an option to replace words with emojis via the rotor.

Type "I love you" or "I heart you" for example, switch to the emoji keyboard, there's be an option to replace certain words with emojis. I've probably got the steps a little wrong but there is a word-to-emoji option in the rotor.

it's rather counterintuitive seeing as how there is no search feature.

The emoji keyboard on iOS using voiceover is a pain. I can't just swipe through all the options I will have to screen tap randomly and hope to get close to the emoji I am looking for. Has anyone figured out a trick to get the emoji keyboard to work better?

Yes, once you open the emoji keyboard, use your rotor options to get to Typing Mode and set it to standard typing. That way you won't accidentally type emoji characters while you search and swipe through them all. A three-finger swipe to the left and right will adjust the page of emojis being display, then just touch down to find your place again amongst the emoji on the new page. Find the ones you want, double-tap to type them, then switch back to the standard keyboard and revert to Touch typing. It's a little more work, but allows you to explore all the silly emojis without having to finger hunt all over the place.

Awesome. Thank you. This helped a lot. The three finger swipe did the trick. My typing mode is always set to standard. I'm actually not really familiar with the other typing modes. I can't really see the screen at all so I'm not sure if the different modes are useful or not. I can research that more though. Also, sorry for the delayed response. BaconReader seems intent on not letting me reply to comments.

No problem. For the typing modes, Standard Typing is where you can touch and move the VO cursor around to each key to hear what it is, but then have to double-tap each one to actually type it. This takes forever. Touch Typing allows you to put your finger on the screen and drag it around to find the right key, and when you hear it, taking your finger off the screen will type the letter. Much much faster and very useful if you have good muscle memory for the Qwerty layout. Direct Touch Typing is how sighted people use the on-screen keyboard, where as soon as your finger touches a key it gets typed. Not recommended unless you can see and know exactly where all the keys are on the screen or have perfect muscle memory, or potentially have one of those braille screen protectors that have tiny dots for the keyboard layout.

And yeah, for the Reply to Comment thing, I filed a bug in the BaconReader development subreddit and they were able to reproduce it and are currently working on a fix :)

This is great. Thank you. I switched to touch typing mode and am already typing much faster :). I feel like a newb having not known about that typing mode before lol. And thanks for the update on the BaconReader reply to comment bug. Appreciate it.
