Requesting an Interview for a School Project (self.Blind)
submitted by MandadnaM
Hi everyone!
I am an O&M student about halfway through my program. One of my courses requires me to interview an older adult (60 + years) with vision loss that came about later in life.

I would like to ask you some questions regarding O&M services you receive/received as well as asking about the types of assistive technology you use. This is for two separate projects: one is to get an idea of services, experiences, and concerns with regards to O&M; and the second is to get an idea of what assisted assistive technology you've tried or currently use and how that process was.

If you are interested, please comment below and I'll message you or send me a message so we can communicate. I will, of course, use a pseudonym to protect your privacy. I've done several observations with younger children, but I'm very interested in hearing from some adults about their experiences. Thank you all so much.

(Mods, sorry if this isn't allowed. I checked the rules and thought it was okay?)

Good luck with the O&M program! I've been working in the field for about 10 years now, and those sorts of interviews can be tricky (especially for that specific age group, which often is less likely to be online). You may need to check with people in your local area. Have you talked to your local rehabilitation program to reach out to people?

Thanks for the feedback! I'm not really sure where to find people. I work in an office job and we dont have anyone who fits that demographic. I tried tracking down contact info through the Texas Workforce website and there were like 50 different phone numbers but I couldn't narrow it down. Any suggestions or it is a go down the list calling til you find someone kind off thing?

Here are two groups that may be able to help.

https://www.austinlighthouse.org/

Austin Lighthouse, or the Travis Association of the Blind

https://www.nfbtx.org/

National Federation of the Blind Texas.

If they aren't able to help you directly, they may be able to point to a resource that can.
