Playing 'Chicken' Against Sighted People When Using a Cane (self.Blind)
submitted by deadserious333
What are your experiences? Personally, getting to my 8 PM appointments in the city can be pretty hectic, yet, amusing. Can't tell you how many people I hear coming, and will have to "challenge" for the right of way when I am crossing the street. Usually ends with them being mildly startled (due to lack of attention) or even as far as them tripping over my cane!

Mostly just oblivious people. I got my cane stuck between the legs of two different people at one intersection on the same day. Crossed one way, almost tripped a guy and almost snapped my cane, then an hour later went the opposite way across the same streets and almost dropped a woman who was talking with her friends and walked through my cane. My sighted girlfriend says the reactions are the same when I trip people. They fall over, get up looking pissed and turn to me, then that immediate change where they realize what has happened and feel shame and apologetic. I've hip-checked and cane-checked countless children with oblivious parents. I try to listen out for people heading my way, but must admit walking myself straight towars them just to find out what they do can be quite fun.

Canada is my favorite place now, since no matter where we were, people would just apologize for being within 5 ft of me, even when they were nowhere near my path. Groups of them would pull their fbuddies out of my way and apologize no matter how drunk when we attended hockey games at the Leafs arena.

Don't forget the drunk guy you tripped who fell into the street, got up, and apologized! Oh, Canada. ❤️

I worked in a busy high school with a totally blind student. On the way to classes, other students would comment, wondering if he was really blind. I witnessed one guy try to leap over his cane at the bottom of a staircase. It did not go well.

I used my cane all through high school and college and oblivious people staring at their phones are the worst. If they get tangled up in my cane, I feel bad, but my sighted boyfriend always reminds me that they're the ones with the eyes and they should use them, haha.

Maybe because I am very aware nothing like this has happened and I am very good with crowds. I just tell people coming through.

Hahaha same here!

Because of my lack of depth perception it looks like everything and everyone is going to hit me so it’s really annoying.
