This temporary bathroom sign literally has a picture of Braille without it being raised in any way (self.Blind)
submitted by Multi-tunes
The "All Gendered Bathroom"--also known as the Handicapped Bathroom--in one of my campus buildings has this sign that was printed out on some flimsy paper and it depicts the name in Braille. But the Braille is completely useless because it's just a flat image.

$1 It shows an image of a toilet with the words "All-Gender Bathroom" underneath and a line of--completely flat--Braille on the bottom.

I'm not blind or partially sighted myself, but this sign has been there for at least a couple years. It's incredibly inaccessible for anyone who needs to use Braille, but it's also incredibly stupid that this sign hasn't been replaced by something permanent yet.

I've never been on this subreddit before, but I've been thinking about this sorry excuse for a sign for a long time now.

have you ever thought of just taking the sign down and poking holes in it? I mean how hard could it be?
Multi-tunes [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Does that help? You mean like poke the holes in from the back of the page right?

I could definitely try that.
U5efull 3 points 4y ago
sure, just use a sharp pointed pen, poke it from the back and it will feel like brail paper
Multi-tunes [OP] 2 points 4y ago
I should try that at least until it's replaced.

Is this in the US? An angry email with a few references to the ADA should do it in that case.
Multi-tunes [OP] 2 points 4y ago
Actually it's Canada. I'm not sure what the ADA is, but there's probably a similar thing here.
meeowth 4 points 4y ago
Google reveals that many Canadians *wish* there was an ADA equivalent in Canada.
Multi-tunes [OP] 2 points 4y ago
Oh, shit really?
Ghost_of_a_Black_Cat 1 points 4y ago
The ADA is the Americans with Disabilities Act. Check out the $1 for more information.

Steal it. And then keep stealing it until they fix it.

The LPT is always in the comments.

Oops... wrong sub.
bigblindmax 3 points 4y ago
It couldn’t hurt to bring this to the school’s attention. Better yet, if there’s a student org focused around disability and accessibility issues, they would probably be happy to know about it or have your support in getting it fixed.

Braille fail!
estj317 2 points 4y ago
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! That is way too funny. I don’t know what to say anymore. I’ve now seen or heard about everything!

Good recommendations here. I don’t have anything to add but wow! Ahaha!

This is the stupidest bullshit I've read this year. Jesus Christ some people are ignorant.
bscross32 2 points 4y ago
that's cute lol.
szalhi 2 points 4y ago
At least the Braille is correct, that gives them some credit right?

Right?

An attempt was made

I'm a bot, *bleep*, *bloop*. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

LOL that's pathetic.

Who doesn't know that we need to touch braille that's like, the point...

But, have you actually touched it to make sure? Because maybe it's like real shallow bumps covered by another layer of paper or something. I mean I doubt it, and that would also make it hard to read, but still.

I mean if you do really care, and I appreciate that you do, than maybe you should bring it to their attention. They'll probably blow you off but it's worth a try right just to say you did.
Multi-tunes [OP] 1 points 4y ago
Oh, I’m sure it’s completely flat. And yeah I really need to send an email to somebody who’s responsible for these things. Lots of people in the department have been complaining about it (including professors) but apparently accessibility isn’t high on the priority list of whoever is in charge of this.

The building is littered with temporary paper Braille signs (that are actually thick and raised) and we really need to get permanent ones.

Although considering how the department deals with damaged instruments (as in not at all), I doubt they will do anything about this unless some sort of formal complaint is made to an authority above our small department.

What about making a complaint with the ADA?
