Do any of you have pets? How challenging is it as a blind/visually impaired person? (self.Blind)
submitted by princesspooball
Good lord I need to proofread before I post!! Let me translate my pile of jibberisn for you:

My eyesight is good at the moment but it's going to eventually deteriorate because of my glaucoma. I've always had pets and I'd like to at least have one pet even when I completely lose my vision. Do you have any pets? What are the biggest challenges that you've faced?

So far as a fully sighted person I've had cats, dogs, hamsters, fish, parakeets, rabbits, frogs, and a turtle. Im just trying to prepare myself for any unforseen challenges that may come up when I go blind.

u/marconius (he's fully blind) and I have a cat. In the beginning, Marconius was afraid he'd squish the cat and step on the cat, etc., but the cat quickly learned to get out of the way or meow loudly to announce his presence. If the cat gets stepped on because he's quiet, that's his fault. Marconius cleans the kitty litter with a scooper and gloved hands. He doesn't have any problems feeding the cat or giving him water. I think the biggest challenge has been when the cat throws up for whatever reason. Marconius doesn't know where to avoid... Lol and I end up having to do all the cleaning and describe to him the area he needs to stay out of while the carpet cleaning stuff dries.

I have and have had plenty of pets. As long as you do your research on what you want to get, maybe visit someone with one before getting it, everything will work out fine. animals are very great at recognizing blindness, and will happily help you in any way they can. For reference, i have had dogs, cats, birds, goats, horses, rabbits, a fish, guinea pigs, hamsters, and have lived with a turtle.

Yes I actually kind of nerd out and like learning as much as I can when I get a new pet. What kinds of birds have you had? I've only had parakeets but I would love to someday get a green cheek conure.

sorry for the late response. I have had parakeets, and currently live with an amazon. Just do your proper research, and make sure you are comfortable handling any pet you want. That goes for anyone though, no matter on their vision.

I currently have a 100# Sulcata tortoise, two dogs, a horse and a burro. The dogs have learned to stay out from under my feet. They seem to understand that I can’t see them. They do not move for other people, just me. The tortoise is 28 years old. He lives outside in my yard. The horse and burro are in my pasture. They both fully take advantage of me not being able to see them so I improvise by feeding them in their stalls when I need to catch them. Neither of them seem to worry that I tend to be clumsy around them and sometimes bump into them. I think they are used to me. When I ride, I go out with friends and we avoid trails with low hanging branches so I don’t get smacked in the face. I have their feed and water set up so it is easy to access.

The part about branches smacking you in the face made me laugh because whenever I used to ride on trails the branches would smack me in the face even when I could see them half the time

I have two rambunctious cats with my sighted partner! The worst is when I accidentally step on them. They learn quickly though, cuz even my partner has noticed that the youngest one watches my eyes to see if I'm looking at her when I'm nearby. The older one generally goes to higher ground when she's wanting to chill out. It's pretty cute, watching them adapt. Other than that, it's not awful for me. I make sure to keep their food and such all in the same place so that I know where they are at all times :)

My guide dog. He's a normal dog when he's not working. With daily walks and everything.

I have a dog! I’m not completely blind but he wears a bell so I can hear where he is all the time and to keep him from under my feet I taught him “move” and “out” commands. (Former I point and he moves in that direction and latter he goes to the door of the room and waits there). With dogs it’s just training and they kinda intuit a lot, they’re smart animals.

Three dogs and a cat. (I'm blind in one eye and the other is so so). I really haven't had any issues with my pets - I have a good set up - a back door that leads directly to a fenced yard. I couldn't survive without them. Best of luck to you.
