Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what kind of TV/movie/media do blind people find most engaging? (self.Blind)
submitted by Mercurycandie
Is there any popularly consumed media outside of podcasts and audio books? Any recommendations or favorites?

I'm not completely blind so I do still WATCH shows and movies. That being said, my tolerance and taste for shows and movies is a bit different.

I prefer cartoons a lot because they're already presented in high contrast, Steven Universe and Futurama are favorites.

I don't like looking at most live-action media. Action movies are often too dark or lack contrast, dramas are similar and horror is worse.

I also watch a lot of YouTube videos, but I often just listen to their content.

I'm not visually impaired myself, but I'll answer with what I know. There are many accessible forms of entertainment which are normally thought of as heavily visual. Many popular movies and TV shows have what's called an "audio description" option, where a narrator describes what is happening visually in between existing dialogue.

$1

Most Netflix originals will, for example, have an AD audio option in the captioning/language menu. Hell, that's how I "watched" most of Stranger Things on my daily drives to and from work.

With some assistance or equipment, gaming can also be accessible. Check out $1 from my buddy Sightless Kombat.

As far as what people find to be "most engaging", that is indeed a little silly to ask. Everyone has different tastes. Some people like sci-fi games, some like rom-coms, some can't get enough anime. Visual impairment is not going to change someone's individual preferences much.

I really think there's a secondary market for audio-described movies and television shows. I imagine if you released a podcast that was just audio described episodes of popular TV shows, people would listen to them!

Blind Mouse Mart had their movie vault (not sure if it is still active, though).

EDIT: Yup, seems to be still active. I saw a movie posted from 2018.

I'm of 2 minds about that website since technically it's illegal, and distributing the audio track of a movie for free still seems to be kind of dick move on the blind mice's part. That said, there's no other way I can think of to consistently access Ad on current titles.
If I can at some point gain access to any movie/tv show I want with an An option, I would not mind paying a little more for the experience of getting to enjoy a film with my SO without having to figure out how to sync an mp3 with a video, only to learn that they're different cuts of the same film.
Anyone feel me on this?

I think reading the book is the best experience I've ever managed. Not the audiobook - that's someone else interpreting a work for me. I might enjoy an audiobook for its own sake, but reading the author's words, building those scenes in my own head, is by far my personal preference.
I have no useful vision.

Are you 100% blind? Blind from birth?

went blind when I was 15, very minimal light perception and right eye but that is it

The only physical books I read are manga because they often have large text depending on the series. Tokyo Ghoul has larger than usual print for the English but the French is microscopic. All other reading I do on my phone. I also use subs when watching videos because I have color graphème synesthésie and it makes reading cause less eye strain.

Netflix has a lot of movies and shows with audio description. I have Guardians of the Galaxy on dvd with audio description and it’s my total fav movie! Other than that I enjoy history and biographical documentaries, you don’t need to see what’s on screen to enjoy them as most the content is verbal.

I'm all about books and podcasts, but I also watch a ton of TV and movies. I always prefer there to be audio description included, which is why Netflix and Amazon are so great. It's not a must though. I'm totally blind and I still watch all of the Arrowverse shows on the CW, for example. They're not described, but the storoies are still easy to follow, and the fight scenes sure sound cool!

I also love going to the movies. My gf and I just recently got AMC A-List because 90 percent of the time they have audio description headsets available at their theatres.

Oh I forgot I also enjoy highly dialogue-driven stuff just because it's a tad more accessible. I grew up on the Kevin Smith movies and love shows like what John Oliver and Trevor Noah do. Family Guy is also the shit. I hear it's audio described on some corner of the internet, but I haven't found it. Still freaking sweet.

I don’t do much media besides music. I think that mostly has to do with personality and that I am a really extroverted extrovert, both in the context of psychology and colloquial uses.I guess to me sitting and watching a movie is boring. Being on reddit and talking to someone is more fun or going outside and talking someone ear off is more entertaining. Well I have conversations I don’t talk someone’s ear off. But yeah. Hahaha!

I’ve watched regular movies before without audio description. It’s possible. I own a few when I can get myself to sit down and watch movies I usually do them without audio description. I am totally blind. I do most regular media I am not a huge fan of podcasts and audiobooks. I prefer e-text and podcasts = boring to such an extrovert. And music usually is on the background when I do stuff have to be productive. But otherwise yeah. I am doing less and less media I get the more I get older and the more well known and popular I am. I own at least 10 speakers if not 10 probably 8. I am a techy and such but yeah.

I got an Apple TV a few weeks ago and love it, I have a Netflix Plex the local news channels and prime on it
I am almost completely blind so don’t bother looking at the screen but it is great to have for when people come over
I I watch lots of different things big bang theory, South Park, law and order special victims unit
I use YouTube on it to stream old love line episodes
So, pretty much everything I do prefer when I watch movies that discribed netflix has a lot of

I’m not blind but I know many blind people just listen to the audio or certain programs narrate what is happening on the screen for them.
