All the people who try to avoid giving me sea food...
estj3171 points4y ago
I don’t usually have problems with most people. I suppose if anything that bothers me is people not taking me seriously and nothing I says either matters or makes a difference.
Usualy I get along with just about anyone but there are those who just refuse whatever I tell them to just still not take me seriously. Usually people shape up and understand. Then we have no issues but yeah.
EdmundKirk1 points4y ago
I don't get it.
flarbargason [OP]1 points4y ago
“Sea” food. They probably think they’ll get offended by the word “sea” because it sounds like “see” because for some reason a lot of people think blind people are offended by words about sight. Which they aren’t.
multi-instrumental2 points4y ago
This is *hilarious*!
flarbargason [OP]2 points4y ago
I didn’t think people went that far with it. I’ve been scolded at by a bystander when I said “see you later” to a blind person I use to know in 5th grade.
EdmundKirk1 points4y ago
Oh, Okay. Thanks.

"How many fingers am I holding up?"
Enough to go fuck yourself with.
... I really hate it. In case you can't tell.
I also hate "good job!" when I manage to not throw myself down stairs or something.
Also the people who yell and talk slow. My brain's shitty, but not that shitty.

>How many fingers am I holding up?
I've had teachers randomly ask me that when I was a kid and it was so infuriating
OutWestTexas5 points4y ago
I hate when people grab me to “lead” me because they think I need unsolicited help.
flarbargason [OP]2 points4y ago
Seriously? People do that?
OutWestTexas2 points4y ago
Yes! I have had people literally grab me and drag me along.
Prefect3161 points4y ago
When people grab me, they end up laid out on the sidewalk behind me. Self-defense. Don't touch me.
macmutant1 points4y ago
This. I know they’re trying to help, but I could do with less paternalism.
WittiePenguin5 points4y ago
I hate when people talk really slow and really loud when speaking to me. I also hate getting asked how I use my phone, or any other technology. Just because I get asked so much
macmutant4 points4y ago
The worst behavior, for me, is when someone cuts in front of me in line, let’s say, at Starbucks, thinking I won’t know they did it because I won’t see them. Little do they know, I’m low vision, not blind. I do see them, and I call them out every time.
flarbargason [OP]3 points4y ago
Ok. That’s just fucked up. I wouldn’t think the bystanders would allow that.
macmutant1 points4y ago
People sometimes aren’t paying attention. It’s also subtle. The person acts like they didn’t realize what they were doing. Agree that it’s fucked up.

How do you take care of a baby if you are blind? Can you see blue or red around me if I am a good/bad person?
flarbargason [OP]2 points4y ago
“Can you **SEE** blue or red around me?” Makes sense.
[deleted]2 points4y ago
Seriously? Blue or red?
Inferi3 points4y ago
I've had so many people get in a huff if they come up on my side when, say, I have headphones or something in, and I don't notice them. They'd treat me like I was being an asshole and ignoring them, even if I told them I can not see them there, I don't have much peripheral vision! I try to let those I know to give me a tap if they come up to me like that, but some don't listen.
KaiDoesStuff2 points4y ago
Having random people speak on my behalf since they think they can speak from experiences that they have never had. It can be helpful, but it can also come off as extremely rude or tedious when people start jumping to conclusions after knowing me for 10 minutes.
In the same vein as that, trying to relate to my impairment. I know that most people are doing it to comfort me, but it usually just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Honestly? If your eyes work perfectly, I _don't_ want you to relate to me. Visual impairments are pretty terrible.
"How many fingers am I holding up?" Enough of that, please. It's not funny. It may have been funny the first time when I was like 6, but now it's just disappointing to think that people still think that's hilarious. Is it? Not to me, at least.
Another example. This time, it comes from Reddit. Whenever blind people come up, half of the thread becomes people typing garbled nonsense and getting karma for it. Are you _actually_ serious?
mobydogsmomma2 points4y ago
People say hello to my guide dog and ignore me completely, but I actually find it funny most of the time. I just laugh it off.

I know my family does it because they care, but they used to lose their shit if I went down stairs on my own. And if I ever stumble or lightly bump into anything, my grandma gasps and loses her absolute shit. I know they do it cuz they care, but man, does it ever piss me off.
Also, I have gotten yelled at for bumping into people. It was so frustrating cuz I felt awful, but they *yelled* at me like I was their kid or something.
And omg, if I ever almost walk into something, some people will grab me and pull me away. I know it's for a safety thing, but holy shit. It drives me bonkers.

How do you write if you’re blind, um.... are you for real right now? Technology is a wonderful thing, people. 😊👏🏻😁😌🥳

I'm tired of people talking to me like I have a mental disability... Although it's very entertaining when I start using long, complicated, obscure words which they mostly don't understand, just for the pleasure of ‘dumbing down’ my vocabulary... If they treat me like I'm not able to talk normally, I'm bloody well going to make them feel like under-educated primates...
I hate living in a small town of a third-world country...
flarbargason [OP]1 points4y ago
What country?
DiegoARL382 points4y ago
Mexico... I'm from Venezuela, though, so cultural differences don't precisely help, either...

People being surprised I want an education and to do lots of things rather than simmering in self pity in my room.
