Picture taking tip (self.Blind)
submitted by estj317
Here’s a tip for any other blind person who is not already on the bandwagon and perhaps as slow to the game as I am.

Okay, so when I take pictures especially scans of documents my hands shake a little and the paper now turns in to gibberish garbage. Not remotely readable. so, I gave up scanning my own stuff. I have a flatbed but that hasn’t worked for a while. My scanner is from 2011.

I heard about getting a selfy stick for a very long time, and how that may help me. I actually a long time ago got this really big complex reading stand a scan stand that I have not tried to assemble. Come here and watch me assemble something like that and have a good laugh. I am so not mechanically or diy gifted it’s not funny. So I didn’t put it together. Also the scanstand was fairly big, I couldn’t just keep that on my desk.

So, I finally finally bought myself a selfy stick last tuesday right before I went to watch the state of the union address. It’s been sitting on my desk for a while, there was a few pieces. I was like er am I going to be able to put this together. Still not sure what the pieces has to do with one another. Give it to someone who can figure it out? Hahaha! Anyway I took the one selfy stick and tried a piece of paper.

Yeah, it read it.

So the lesson of the day if anyone’s hands are shaking or a little unstable when taking a picture and tapping the screen maybe try that?

Seems to work quite well for me.

How do you mean? Put the phone on the selfy stick. Put the stick in the middle part of the edge of the paper. Maybe you’ve already opened the scanning app. I used knfb reader. And then make sure the camera is straight over the page and snap a picture with knfb reader and it will read it to you.

They're really good. I also use a giraffe reader. It's basically a cardboard-feeling flat thing which you unfold, a bit origami like. It's simple once you've learned how. It has a cradle for your phone and a flat, high-contrast place for your paper. Folded, it fits in the bag with my laptop like any other document.

I second the giraffe reader option here. I adore mine! I do wish it had rubber feet though to prevent it from moving around on the desk.

I think any protrusion at the bottom would thicken the inner fold, unfortunately. It is very light, perhaps the next generation should be some heavier material.

True. Blue tack is a good temporary solution though.

Thanks for the resource. I have never heard of the giraff reader.
