Does anyone here have experience with smart glasses or similar products? (self.Blind)
submitted by 410527416370
I've just stumbled upon the $1 which are very interesting to me, the idea of visual help using a mounted camera seems very valuable but it seems like it should be possible to rig something up under the thousand dollar mark. Has anyone tried this or similar products before? Would love to hear your experiences and thoughts with them.

Will magnification work the Esight sounds like what you need or magnifying solutions. I guess he’ll have to learn to read the braille, train his fingers and not look at it. It’s important to do it that way. Braille is actually very valuable to learn. Will he actually be expected to lose more vision, if so this is the best route, disciplining him to read braille and not to use his eyes for it is probably best bet, a blindfold?

Also magnifiers is another good option. What about a tripod, an iphone or ipad mini and knfb reader?

Or go etext and use magnification on a tablet or use the screen reader. Perhaps an ipad?

I won’t get tired of emphasizing this, if he will eventually lose his vision, get him started on braille right now. It’s very very very essential.

I own the orcam but I regret it. It's really complicated to always find the right lighting and position so it can read something. Also you have to have a bit of sight left to know where you are pointing. It's not working for me though because it often doesn't recognize what I want it to read.

OrCam is an absolute joke. I cannot recommend it.

Agreed! Especially for that price.

I do not however , I am looking into these for someone and they offer free trials.

I will report back how it goes for them.

I’d love to hear how you get on. My 5 year old son could really benefit from these at school. His remaining vision is low enough that he really struggles to read print even in font 200, but is high enough that he naturally tries to read Braille by looking at it rather than feeling - quite the conundrum

eSight is essentially a wearable CCTV. Can he use a CCTV? If he can, then it is likely he can use the eSight, to some degree. However, one caveat is that unless someone has really good mobility skills, they shouldn't be using it to walk around. Because of the way it works, you don't have a lot of your peripheral vision, which means someone may not see a drop-off coming up.

I am sure everyones needs are a bit different, this person is over 70, if possible might be worth getting the trial with them for your son.

I did that trial. Keep your money.

I work for a low vision specialist and depending on your acuity, bioptics (telescope glasses) might be something to look into- $1

While someone may be able to rig up something similiar to the Orcam for a lower cost, it would likely be significantly larger and likely have a variety of issues as well. Also, I don't believe there is a device out there that does the facial recognition it does (although that feature seems to be a bit hit and miss). And you do need a certain amount of vision to be able to use the Orcam well.

This is the same exact thing I do as a blind university student, it's awful. I can't stand appearing pitiful and I overcompensate, and then I get in trouble because I'm not thinking logically. Finally someone who understands me
