Can I still be here? (self.Blind)
submitted by kawaii_psycho451
Ok so my left eye is going blind and I’m wondering if I could stay here or if I actually have to be blind to be here

left eyes are overrated anyway. right eyes ftw.
HDMILex 3 points 4y ago
sighted ppl are way too overrated tbh
AntarcticClover 3 points 4y ago
I sincerely believe that if more people were severely disabled, they'd be kinder and better humans. I think being able leads people to taking things for granted and getting excessively into individualism and capitalism. I'm into some casual pro-disability communism from time to time.

I feel offended, left eyes ftw.

Anybody who follows the rules can be here. We're not a "blind-exclusive" community ;)

I am legally blind, not totally blind. I don't see why not. Granted I don't make the decisions but I can't see anyone kicking you for this.

I’m sighted, and my daughter is visually impaired. This sub has been incredibly welcoming to me and helped me understand what she’s experiencing.

Yeah we don’t have blindy snobbery syndrome here hahaha! We don’t care who you are just be interested in blindness, helping out, being curious, or whatever you want that has something to do with blindness. I am not in charge here but I know enough to say that. I know some communities ahem like vorail is very big on like blind people only but this sub is actually very agreeable. People may flip out on some of these other places but no one is going to flip out or ask questions if you join us even if you were fully sited.

That's just baffling to me. There's no way for sighted individuals to reach any level of understanding if they are excluded. One of the main impediments to accessibility within the community is ignorance among those who do not require accommodation and ignorance can only be remedied with information and that comes with awareness and inclusion.

I am in total agreement with you. Just not all of us views it that way. I am very pragmatic about this issue. But I think a lot of people are sensitive to this and expect people to know without being informed.

Sited people are so (insert negative statement) and I hate when they ask (insert question).

I hear these stories about people overreacting to this type of stuff. Maybe it’s just me being tougher than nails. Hahahah!

I can understand the frustration, though. So many people don't have the information, so it's like when my four kids each come to ask me the same question and I have to give the same answer over and over and it just gets tedious and annoying and annoying at times.

When I was a kid, my mom had cancer. Her leg was amputated and she was bald from chemo. There were many times people stared or commented. On one occasion, I had told my daycare/preschool friends about her wooden leg, and when my mom came to pick me up, they all wanted to knock on her wooden leg. Of course, curious children sometimes take it too far and they all ended up knocking on her other leg just to compare. She was great about it, but she was probably pretty bruised up after that. On another occasion, a little girl smiled at her in the mall, but the mother panicked and started screaming at my mom for coming to the mall sick and risking everybody's lives. I guess she thought cancer was contagious.

So I guess I can understand wanting a break from the questions and curiosity and the various odd responses due to the ignorance of others. Still, none of that's going to go away without getting the information out there.

Here’s my perspective on this.

I understand all that. And I usually don’t consider myself a very patient person at all. Haha! Very tough minded fast moving person. But this is how I look at it.

It is a opportunity to teach, to explain, to educate. If you are different I think I am different in many other ways then just blind, but I’ve learnt that you just have to explain yourself. Also information is interesting and everyone is different so information is helpful but not always the best. Blind people have different ways of doing things dealing with it, some independent and some incredibly incredibly sheltered and even after their family dies off they’re not going to live a normal life. And some of these people don’t have any other disabilities.

But I do think there is already some but people meet you and so they want to know right there and then. They don’t want to search up the internet for blind people and information. So they ask. I say view it with a good nature and try to adapt.

I also think that some patience and humility is needed here. If you can prove it to these people that you are capable a lot of them will trust you I find even admire you or whatever the case is.

Hahahahahahahahaha! Okay that’s funny that’s actually an interesting story you have, thanks a lot for shareing it.
