How my video game playing is affected...(self.Blind)
submitted by knifeazz
Hey guys! First time posting in this sub, so I’m sorry if this is redundant or weird.
I lost complete eyesight in my right eye when I was 4 years old due to an accident with a pair of scissors. I have practically no memory of life with both eyes.
However, I’m an avid video game player and I’ve realized lately that I’m not *quite* as good as all my friends. I can hold my own in certain games, but ones where things come down to split second decisions like Super Smash are where things get dicey.
Do you think my input/coordination is impaired because of my impairment or am I just not that good?

I lost my left eye to cancer when I was 2. I grew up playing all kinds of video games. Being monocular had no real effect to my gaming, and I was really good in twitch style FPS gaming, precision shots in any shooter, quick decisions in racers, adventure gaming, action games, etc. The screen is a 2D surface and there is no depth perception at all presented to you in the game.
I used to destroy my friends in Quake, Unreal, CoD, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, etc. If you find you keep losing, just play and practice more. The lack of an eye definitely has nothing to do with if :) I miss Smash Bros. and I always played as Yoshi before I lost my sight. I'd hold my own, but since I never owned my own Nintendo system to play on, I was always a little slower at the game than my friends who owned the console. I'd take them out in any PC game, though, since we all owned those, plus would be better at Playstation games than most of them since those are the only systems I personally owned.

Thank you!! I always wondered if maybe I was a *little* delayed but I’m probably just trying to think of excuses. I’m actually really, really good at Overwatch so it’s not like I’m bad all around, thankfully.

I'm legally blind (completely blind in one eye, low vision in the other), and have been playing video games since my dad brought home the first pong console when I was six years old. Since then, I've moved on to computers and modern consoles, most recently, the Xbox One. I've found playing on a large screen helps, and games that are either turn-based, or don't require split-second coordination and decision-making are work out best for me. Honestly, I think my vision is only a factor when I genuinely can't see the movement fast enough to react. If I had full vision in one eye, I believe I would be on close to equal footing with everyone else.

Why do you assume that because you're blind in one eye that it's the reason for your friends being better at you at games?
How much do they play those games? How much do you play those games? Are you just "messing around" or carefully planning your practice to get better?
Gaming is a skill, just like playing the saxophone is a skill. Practice, "natural ability", and many other factors will influence how skilled you are at a specific activity.
How's your vision in your left eye? Do you wear glasses/contacts?

I play a decent amount. I try to play the best to my ability. I just have never met someone else who is blind or partially blind so I’ve just always wondered.
Vision in my left eye is 20/20, so I probably don’t have any excuses.

I'm guessing your friends probably play more than you. Everyone thinks they're great at Smash until they go to a local tournament lol. I'll never forget my first one when I was younger. I thought I was hot shit and I probably wasn't even top 50 there. There's nothing wrong with playing games casually but I was just trying to explain how it is a skill and there are individuals who actually do it professionally. I've played pro Smash players and you wouldn't even believe how good they are in person.

I would guess that having complete vision in one eye is only so much of a handicap for video games. Having impaired vision or being completely blind is \*definitely\* a handicap for video games.

You have to have some kind of vision to even play typical video games. Take care of that eye!

I'm completely blind and a huge gamer as well. There's a lot of variables that I think are worth pointing out:
- How good are your friends.
- How long have you been playing Smash.
- Are you using the sounds to help you.
- Etc.
when I play with my girlfriend, I beet her probably 60% of the time. Try conditioning your opponent, then mixing things up later in the match. It throws people off guard. I have a youtube channel where I upload all sorts of videos, including gaming videos. I've been thinking about creating a Smash Ultimate video, so keep an eye out for that:

I’ll definitely check your channel out. I played a lot of melee but didn’t play very much brawl or smash 4, so I’m kinda getting back into it. I do fairly well against friends but get destroyed online. I just never met somebody else who was blind/partially blind like I am so I guess I’ve always just wondered. I appreciate the comment!

u/marconius might be able to help you with this. He lost his left eye as a baby and only played video games with one eye.

I can’t really comment because I have bad fine motor skills but I find that I can rely on audio cues to help play more efficiently.
