Blind/Visually Impaired people who work in the pharmaceutical industry(self.Blind)
submitted by nonchalantdonkey
Hi, I'm a guy with syndromic retinis pigmentosa (USHER type II) and I'm applying for jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. I recently got an offer for a position (QC analyst) at Pfizer but it's conditional on me completing a pre-screening check which includes a reference check, a criminal record check and a medical. The medical is what is worrying me as I'm wondering will they withdraw my application based on my illness. The main aim of my post was to find if other people with visual impairment/blindness have had jobs in the pharmaceutical industry on technical side, rather than on the sales or management side of things. I'd appreciate if you could share your experiences

On my illness, I think it's in the early stage as I was diagnosed 3 years ago and I'm in my mid 20s. I still play soccer with my sighted friends although this is getting more difficult with each passing year. I still cycle too, even at night, but only on well lit streets.

I thought the medical test was usually a drug screening. If you’re like me (I have Ushers too), you’ll be fine. They can’t reject your application outright because of a disability when there are plenty of reasonable accommodations for the position.

Well, I have to fill out a medical questionnaire too that is pretty comprehensive and does ask if I have any visual impairments as well as other medical issues. I was wondering if they could reject me on the basis of eyesight being an important aspect of the position even if my eyesight is still relatively good. I guess I wanted to see if there was anyone else on this subreddit who works in pharma and they found the experience. I'm it will be fine. I just wanted to inform myself as much as possible before doing it. Thanks for the response!

I doubt a reasonable medical inspection would come up with a rare disease like RP. If you can play soccer, get to work, and read you can probably do anything they need. Also, Pfizer is a large company with a sophisticated HR department. If this is a job in the US they’ll be very sensitive to discrimination based on disability and the resulting litigation. At any rate, it sounds like a great opportunity and I’d go for it. Good Luck!
