The real trouble is how far apart things are. 3min trip by car, at least an hour on foot. And that's within the same town. Traveling to a different town, or even just to some natureful place on the outskirts, pretty much requires finding a sighted person to drive. It's kinda depressing.

I'm from Canada, and I teach mobility in Toronto. For Toronto, the public transit is reasonably good. For less dense areas, public transportation isn't as good, and taxi/uber becomes the easier solution.

Lyft, Uber, or the local bus. Or, I walk.

I live on the seacoast of Los angeles county in the united states. I take a lot of buses and trains or did these days out of convenience and efficiency, I am a very busy person, I uber some. I still take a lot of the bus. I am a little skeptical of the trains. LBPD and LAPd is not doing as well as I would really prefer them to do. There was a stabbing on the gold line in late November. The trains can be chaotic and interesting. Especially the line which comes in to my city. Then it progresses in to Los angeles proper in to some really sketchy places. Gangs, homeless, and the like are really allowed to get on and accost the public, police presence isn’t very good, or frequent. Even the police tell you to put away your phone. I think they use to be better, but sadly they aren’t better these days. They need serious patrol and police action, but you’re not going to get it. Even sighted people have stopped taking these transport. I witnessed a guy get beat up by another guy when coming home late at night.

So I haven’t been taking the trains, especially after I heard about the stabbing that went on. I wasn’t there but I believe the guy wasn’t doing anything to encourage it.

San francisco is known to have the best transportation system the muni and bart at least in California. New york is very known for their subway systems. Again I have heard sketchy stories about that system too. I have lived in San Francisco for 3 years and it’s an interesting place.

I would recommend living in big cities like these.

Yes no problem sorry for it being a little... cynical? La isn’t really bad but a lot of the public transport at least from my vantage point seems like in cities at least to have the most needy people riding it, and sometime unfortunately it means this. I mean big cities are the way to go because generally that’s where you can find transport but at the same time you have to be careful. Most times I’ve been on there it has been fine, and nothing has actually happened to me.

It is, depending on where you live.

I used to live in a small town where the max you'd pay from 1 end of town to the other was $20.

I'm in the US and it varies wildly from city to city. I ended up settling in Utah because the public transportation is amazing here. New Mexico, Texas, and Kansas all left me completely stranded. Maybe they're better with things like Uber but that can get expensive pretty quick.
A hefty amount of research is something I would highly recommend before considering coming to the US.
