So frustrated.

Finding work as a blind or visually impaired person is very difficult. I got into construction at 15 and lost my sight at 25. I had no transferable skills. I completely understand how frustrating people’s advice is, so here is how I got to find employment.

I volunteered. Volunteering can help gather connections with people, potential employers and will keep your work experience relevant. I found more employment through volunteering and temporary work than I ever found through applying for jobs.

I understand that your situation may be different to mine. In complete honesty, I’m working on a contract right now and finding full-time employment is still difficult for a blind ex-construction worker. I’m spending my lunch break today applying for jobs and now responding to you, as I get how you’re feeling.

Which country are you applying for work in?

Same, I'm visually impaired, going blind and my current employer is making me train my replacement.

Many areas in the U.S. have a dedicated disabilities board and many of these boards provide career services for those having difficulty finding employment due to the ignorance of employers. If you live in the U.S. and haven't already tried this avenue, it may be worth a shot.

Super frustrating. I used to live in the same town as my state's school for the blind and even then I found that I would only get interviews if I didn't mention I was blind / VI. Walk in with my cane and I never heard back. The only job I ever got was a small business who had previously had a blind employee.

Same! I've been applying for jobs since graduating university(with an actual full degree) in 2016
No-one wants the hassle of filling in forms for a VI person
((I'm from the uk)

I know some UK blind people in the UK that have decent careers, I know others who have had a really hard time of it too.

Make sure you know your rights under the Equality Act 2010 and what support you can get from $1.

Large corporations, institutions and government should have the more enlightened policies on disabled employees.

I don't think you have to mention your disability on your job application but can wait until they invite you for interview and only tell them when they ask if you need any reasonable adjustments for the interview. At that point you can blast them with requests for documents in large print or to bring a "support worker" who will guide you to the interview room or may support you in any tests they give you.

The state of Virginia has a company called Business Opportunities for the Blind. My completely blind father worked with them for 45 years. They employ blind people throughout the whole state. Might be worth looking into. Even if you aren’t in that state they may know of other companies!

Have you heard of the Job Insights
podcast on Blind Abilities? You may find it helpful.

I am sorry to hear that. My sister is going through the same thing.

Same. Everything goes well until they find out I only have 1 eye
Cinema_waste-land 2 points 4y ago
I currently see 20/60 in one eye and 3/300 or so in one. I'm blessed to be able to function for the most part but I'm going to need a cornea replacement in my good. This shit sucks but oh well. Keep going dude
