Questions about vaping (self.Blind)
submitted by mamiice97
Hello guys. I would like to get into vaping. I already tried it and love it, one of my sighted friends has an e-cigarette (an eleaf istick pico). I like this model, and everyone says it's good for beginners. It's quite accessible even though it has an lcd display and there are a lot of tutorials on how to set it up on youtube. It's top filled, too, I heard that's also important. Everything works well, but I still have some questions before buying my set. The main question for me is how you fill the tank. How do you know when it's full when completely blind? I heard you should use a squeeze bottle and then you hear when it's full. But how are you supposed to hear that? I tried with a normal liquid bottle with 10ml (so 5 times vaping fun) and I made a mess. So my mate had the idea that I should use a thing like a pipette for example that holds exactly 2 ml (2ml go in the tank), but the problem is how you get the liquid in there when the bottle opening is so small.

And another question we didn't find a solution to : how do I know the tank is empty? My friend told me you taste it, but then it would be to late and I would have to change the coil all the time. That'd be super annoying, and kind of expensive, too.

I hope someone has ideas for me so I can start vaping soon. :)

Thanks in advance and have a nice evening!

Hi, i'm not blind but am a vaper who happens to use the exact same mod (i-stick pico).

First of, you can open most of the bottles vape juice comes in. When you remove the top cap of the bottle the drip cap can be removed to reveal a larger opening in the bottle; most people use a sharp knife which can be put between the drip cap and the bottle and then twisted to pop of the cap. Note!: be careful twisting the knife with too much force, it might break and launch metal fragments which are especially dangerous to... some specific parts of the human body. This is the easiest way I have found to open the typical 10ml bottles. This technique works on most other types of juice bottles as well.

I have the following suggestion for filling your tank; use a toothpick to "feel out" how low your tank is. You could open your tank every so often (easy to do with the pico, just push the cap to reveal the small opening) and put in the pick straight down whilst holding the pico as level as you can. Pull out the toothpick and slide your fingertip down the toothpick, the moment you feel oil marks the amount of oil you have left. You might want to keep a tissue handy to wipe of your fingertip and the toothpick.

In time you would get better at predicting how full your tank is. I would suggest not letting the liquid decline to less than say 20% from entirely empty to prevent yourself from burning and thereby killing your coils. You could ask someone to let you feel how far the toothpick should be covered if there is about 20% left in the tank.

In regard to filling up your tank; if you can find a bottle with a fine enough drip cap you can actually push the drip cap a bit inside the opening of your tank. Have someone help you get a feel for how much a single squeeze of the bottle will fill about half to 75% your tank, this way you can safely fill it up when you know there is about 20-25% left. If it turns out toothpicks are to porous and absorb the liquid making it hard to feel how far it was submerged you might want to opt for a different material stick; perhaps a plastic one or a paperclip.

An alternative would be to buy many little plastic 10ml refill bottles (in Europe you can buy them, including good drip cap for less than a euro each) and have someone prepare a bunch of those, each filled with about 70% of the total volume of your tank.

Best of luck!

Hi, and thank you for your reply! I have to say that yours is the most helpful one. I also had the idea with the toothpick, and will try it tomorrow when my pico arrives. Plus, I bought injections that hold 1, 2 and 3 ml. 4 ml didn't exist, sadly. So with these I should be fine filling the tank until I figure out how much needs to be filled in. I also watched youtube videos from a person who has the pico, melo 3 and the same bottles than I will have. I just counted the seconds of him filling it and will try that too. I can still make sure that the tank isn't too full by putting the toothstick in. I will also try it with those plastic party sticks you put little bites on if I can feel the juice better. Can you tell me how many units the pico jumps if I set the watt number?
I guess 5, or only 1? I was told that the pico is set on 75 watt at the beginning, so i might want to turn that down to start.
Thank you again and have a nice day.

I use a smok infinix. I have several extra pods. I use TedBacco juice. I have a friend that fills my pods for me. She uses the small bottle that came with the vape. I'm learning how to feel my way through the process, but I over fill. Still working on it.

I'm legally blind and have worked in a vape shop before. Although it is more customizable to use a liquid-fill vape, what I would recommend is an e-hookah or similar pre-filled, disposable e-cigarette. A little pricier if you go through a lot of puffs, but ultimately less wasteful if you would be spilling liquid or burning coils all the time.

That being said, I'm sure you could have a friend or vape shop employee fill a few tanks for you so you can just alternate them out and have them refilled again. More pieces to buy, but again, avoids the waste of spillage.

You'll learn to hear when your tank is low, the pitch of the air pull changes a bit and you'll get to recognize it, ideally.
