Is there a more accessible version of google docs?(self.Blind)
submitted by So_Motarded
I'm participating in a project involving several people with and without sight, and need a collaborative workspace for text editing and file uploads. Unfortunately, I've been informed that Google Docs isn't terribly friendly with screen readers. Does anyone know of a more accessible alternative?
Thank you.

No. Google docs is the most accessible you will get, unless you use something like Office online. They should use NVDA because that works better with docs. It has loads of keyboard shortcuts. I haven't used it extensively but I've used it to colaborate on documents and, while it requires memorizing a bunch of keystrokes to do the most minimalist of tasks because focus still can't get to the button, it works well with NVDA and Chrome. Far better than JAWS.

Ah, that's a bit disappointing but that makes sense. Thank you for the detailed reply!

I'm helping someone with the same issue, anyone try it with Mac or iPad and how does that work?

I’ve had this exact problem and would recommend office online if you can use it. You can edit in a normal word doc that will sync with the online document.

Google docks is very accessible with screen readers, especially nvda. check out the page called using google docks with a screen reader that google has published. That has most if not all the answers you'll need.

Unfortunately your best bet is using voiceover on your iPhone and there is a google docs app

I’ve found the same things good and bad things with google dox not been completely terrible but most times not that great.

Maybe this is just my experience, but Google Docs doesn't work very well with Voiceover. You can read through documents but when editing them, Voicover wont read what you delete and can make things very confusing as to where you are.

hi there,
google docs is indeed accessible. for more information go to this link
I use Google Docs daily and have no issues with it. If you have a Windows machine, use Jaws with either Chrome or Firefox. Make sure screen reader mode is on, and braille display support is also on regardless of whether or not you have one. Also, on Mac, download Chrome and install Chromevox to use Docs. Message me if you have any questions.

I’ve had good and bad experiences. And not everyone uses nvda. I don’t know how to use that screen reader all that well honestly I use mostly mac and iphones these days. But if on the PC I use Jaws and actually prefer it.
