Resources for the Newly Blind (self.Blind)
submitted by ABlindManPlays
Hello all, a while back I was diagnosed with advanced keratoconus. Scleral contact lenses failed as a solution due to eye shape and nerve damage in one arm, and my doctor says my corneal walls are so thin that a failed transplant could completely blind me. I was recommended to a service that was supposed to help me get equipment and software needed to help me continue to function, but it turns out that I only qualify for that if I am employed through their service, and severe bipolar disorder negates that chance due to months of depression each year, even medicated. We are also in our tenth year of fighting for disability and I've had zero income. I live alone through public assistance.

I find myself in need of help. I could use any resources you have. Screen readers, organizations that can get me advanced sunglasses and a cane, maybe some magnifiers... I'm honestly at a loss, and the planned assistance falling through yesterday has put my life into a tailspin.

Search nfb free white cane they will send you one. I need to go get mine.

Also look for something called nvda.

Also what phone or tablet do you use. If an iphone there’s an inbuilt screne reader called voice over. If you use android some of them have something called talk back.

I have an old android smartphone that is on its last legs. Need to see about upgrading sometime soon.

I put in the request for a cane, thank you for sharing that!

I tried running a search for NVDA but all it is showing me is NVIDIA stuff.

So android goes usually google is a good choice or samsung is not a bad idea either. Go for a new phone. Or go for a model of the iphone.
