Unexpected chicken soup (self.Blind)
submitted by StephanieSoul
I am appreciating my landlady for the unexpected soup. It bought me some time to think about my future plans instead of my everyday needs. I was able to apply for a few jobs today. I’m still overwhelmed by the amount of jobs in my field that require a license. Also overwhelmed by the amount of jobs that require supervision capability in it’s literal meaning. I just think of the amount of effort it will take to educate those employers on how I don’t have super vision, yet I can supervise. I also noticed a pattern of work descriptions that ended with a paragraph full of ableist language fully based on assumptions followed by a conclusion paragraph stating the company’s commitment to diversity as if the previous paragraph had nothing to do with overt discrimination. It’s like me writing a job description that states, “Must not have 20/20 vision. Must not be able to see past ten feet in front of them. No vision preferred.”, followed by “We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We encourage all human beings to apply.”.

I understand how you feel. I worked for years in public safety and had to take medical retirement because I can no longer drive due to my visual impairment. Most positions in public safety that I’ve looked at require on-call availability, so I've just about quitl ooking ar all. Most of the jobs in other fields I’ve been interested in all require a valid driver's license. It’s even harder when you live in a rural area with few public transit options.

So far I have received a response from an online tutoring group but I am worried about the online interview. I will have to give familiar with using my screen reader on their website before the interview since I’m not sure what they will have me do. I also just connected with someone who is willing to be my mentor. I’m hoping this will let me figure things out.
