What questions about being blind are you being asked too frequently ? (self.Blind)
submitted by soremonty
Hello everyone! I’m currently planning a short documentary about a blind woman, her daily life and, now comes the interesting part, her first ride on a roller coaster since turning blind over two decades ago.

Even though we both talked a lot about the project and I know her to a fair amount I wanted to ask other legally blind people what the most frequently/annoying/inappropriate question is they’re being asked is?

I’m trying to avoid asking anything inappropriate or annoying as I’m sure that would kill a good conversation or worse, make her uncomfortable before stepping on the roller coaster.

Thanks for any input!

I think this is a very negative attitude for someone to have, I am all for spreading information about my disability, it helps with advocacy and helps with awareness. I used to hate it when people asked me what colours I saw and then the following conversation would usually take place.

Q: So do you know what colours look like?

A: No, not really, I mean I have some idea of light and dark but...

Q: So black is total dark.

A: Right ok.

Q: So do you know green, green is the colour of grass.

A: Yes, I went to the same kindergarten with you.

I think the most annoying question I get asked is the following. "How do you watch TV?" Which brings up a whole debate about semantic issues that confuses people for some stupid reason.

Jesus Christ, do you have absolutely no research skills at all? Literally everything you just asked can be found through a quick subreddit search, in tons of threads like yours.

No an experienced Reddit user. Only made this account to ask this specific question... sorry if I offended you with my non-existing research skills.

No worries. u/HDMILex seems to get testy very quickly around anything concerning research. I would say going into your interview to focus on positive things and what your friend can do. Don't go down the road of prejudice and what she can't do unless she brings it up. The questions that annoy me the most as an instructor are the ones when people assume my students can't do things because of their visual impairment.
