Ignorant Teen Needed To Be Schooled, I Didn't Back Down. Why You Guys Shouldn't, Either. (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
On my afternoon commute, I make my way down an escalator to a train platform. As I make my way further across the platform, a teenaged boy who I believe was on his phone, ever so slightly grazes the tip of my cane with his sneakers. Clearly was not paying any mind to the auditory clicking of my cane approaching him beforehand. Still refuses to move after making contact with the cane. He then makes a snobby remark towards me about it, telling me to "watch where I'm going with that thing." I immediately respond with "excuse me?" He then proceeds to tell me that I "don't need" my cane, and that he's "seen me around before." This is a first for me, though. I then ask him "What do you know about me?" about 2 times. (Slow reaction on his behalf.) He finally says "Nothing, but-." I then cut him off and said "Then keep your mouth shut, asshole." I walked off. He was left with nothing to say, even before I left. Afterwards, I had people come up to me, commending me for my actions. It felt good. Long story short, I want you all to know that it's GREAT to stand up to bullies, don't let anybody punk you, regardless of your disability!

I've actually pushed back to the point to where I thought it was going to end in a fight; a guy yelling in my face. I realized at that point that he if threw a punch, I had no defense. Every punch is a sucker punch to me. He'd find out really really quick that I was telling the truth. It hasn't come to that, thankfully.

I had a old lady accuse me of faking being blind at a Springsteen concert, and yell in my face "I DON'T LIKE PIECES OF SHIT LIKE YOU."

I replied with "......Do you have dementia??" which I probably shouldn't have said, but the only time had experienced being yelled at by a senior for no reason, was when I was in hospital, and roommate had dementia!

PSA: Canes are clubs.

And great for shoving between someone's legs so they lose balance.

FACTS

Good on you for standing up for yourself.

Love it.

I wish I could do that. I might not be so anxious about using my cane.

A few weeks ago I heard three young girls (around 12 years old I think) whisper slightly too loudly “I bet she’s just doing that for attention. She can see” as I walked past with my cane. I didn’t say anything. Still wish I had

When I was a kid at school (very short sighted) I was often asked if I could see without my glasses.

My rehearsed response was to slowly remove my glasses, look at them and say "I can still see how ugly you are!". I'm not sure I could get away with such cheek as an adult.

N.B. the punch line could be made suitably cheesy if I wanted to flirt instead.

never been mocked and made fun of for being blind, only for being a geek.

we are being force fed all sorts of ridiculous information about other protected groups about what to call them and how to treat them. a lot of the information isn't even fact, its just opinion.

-

i wish the same effects were put into educating people about disabilities. just the very technical information that is 100% fact. things like letting people know that most blind people have a little vision and disabled people can contribute to the workforce if given proper access to it.

-

haha i know this is all probably a very unpopular opinion in this sub. bring on the downvotes! /s

I kinda get what you are saying. Having a cane doesn’t mean you’re 100% blind. However that’s how people interpret it.
