Has TalkBack and web browsing gotten any better? (self.Blind)
submitted by CanonofGlass
Hi there!

I've been an Android and subsequently a TalkBack user for nearly 6 years at this point. I've seen the software come leaps and bounds from where it was back in 2013, but even so, one of my biggest issues is still browsing the internet. Websites that JAWS and even VoiceOver (when I had an iPad) could handle flawlessly, TalkBack can't even begin to navigate. It's gotten to the point that I won't bother with using the internet on my tablet in favour of my laptop.

In the next few weeks, though, I'm getting a new (Android) phone and I just had one question. Is browsing the internet with TalkBack any easier or more accessible than it's been in the past? If so, by how much? What are your personal experiences with it?

I briefly pulled up Reddit on my tablet to test it out and it works better than I remember, but that isn't reflective of the entire experience because I only fiddled with it for like five minutes or so.

I use Firefox and it's good enough for me, although I use ShinePlus instead of TalkBack because of a bug I've been unable to track down...

The experience could be better, but there has been recent work on improving compatibility and speed in Firefox for Android... Not sure on Google's side, since I don't use Chrome...

I tried it with Chrome earlier today and everything seemed to be working mostly okay. I'll certainly keep trying Firefox in mind if things don't work out, though.

Oh, also out of curiosity, what's the bug that you've been having?

The TTS volume is too low... I've changed the setting to use media volume, double-checked the internal TTS volume, changed TTS engines, and nothing worked, sadly...

It has to be a TalkBack issue, since other apps use TTS volume just fine...

PS: clearing app data and reinstalling didn't work, either...

That's... Super weird. I've never had that experience or heard of anyone else who had the same issue.
