What are your guide dog school experiences including the good, the bad, and the ugly? (self.Blind)
submitted by TheBlindBookLover
I am planning on applying to guide dog schools (in the U.S.) this year. What has been your experience at the guide dog school if you have attended one? Are there any red flags that I should look for? I have only found testimonials as far as personal anecdotes go.

I received my dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind (California campus). I’ve been very happy with the support that the school provides after graduation, and even happier with my dog. I found that the two questions I commonly asked were: do you use food training (scientifically better), and what support do you provide your graduates. Another great school is Guiding Eyes for the Blind, but I don’t have personal experience with them.

What did you think of the 2 week training period? Other schools train folks for longer.

The two weeks were a bit intense, but I really liked it. There was a lot of information each day, but I never felt overwhelmed. Plus, the shorter time period worked better with my schedule.

My current dog is from Southeastern Guide Dogs in Bradington Florida, the training is very excellent, though as of now one has to pay for their own transportation to the school, unless 5 inch or hardship can be proven.

For my next dog I have a plied to Pilot dogs in Columbus Ohio, getting into pilot was a quick and easy painless process. They pay for transportation to the school. The training can be considered somewhat old-fashioned. From what I’ve heard that just recently started using food-based awards for training.

Isn’t that a 4 week course? Did you find yourself standing around a lot in the heat?

There was a good mix between downtime and training walks. When you graduated to off-campus work they have the downtown training Center and be off campus did shop as 20 basis depending on location of training.

When I went into training for my successor dog. The 20 course was three weeks for first timers and two weeks for three trains. I chose to do a three week because I needed to brush up on some skills that I have let lax.
