Strategies for a blind or low vision person moving to a new area (self.Blind)
submitted by provoke0037
When you are moving to a new area, what are some strategies you leverage to make sure you don't live your life in a box of routines? How do you go about exploring and discovering things to do in the new area you moved to? What's your strategy for creating a social circle in the new area you moved to?

This requires a bit of outside help but when my parents were preparing to move he got a map of the new city and we used something (not sure what it was, my dad ordered it but could also just use a hot glue gun) along the main streets and areas they'd want to use to make a raised line, then added braille labels with the street names. My dad was able to use the map to understand and learn the layout before they even got there.

For me I just like getting out and exploring what’s around me. Also a Accessible GPS is very helpful

Even something older like a trekker or trekker or breeze are used for units. Older units can be found on blind buy sell sell or eBay

On iPhone there is a Seeing AI GPS or nearby explorer either they paid or online version

Nearby explorer is also available for android

Meetup.com for socializing. Used to go to bars/clubs but not so much anymore.

Maps to find businesses around me. Uber/buses for travel. Otherwise it's a piece of cake.

Consider Walkscore. It’s an app (also website) that tells you how walkable a given area is. For me it’s come in handy while researching.
