Blind Youtuber? (self.Blind)
submitted by tutzig
Hello everyone,

My first time posting in here. I’ve been legally blind for the past eight years, since i was 12 years old. I have always enjoyed creating content, and have to do it for my major at college. But i wanted to know if any of you have had experience making content like YouTube videos and what your thoughts were on a blind guy doing it?
Would love some feedback and what you would find interesting.

I haven’t... as much as I’d like to, I’m kind of self-conscious about it. However there are a lot of blind YouTubers. I personally really like James Rath. There’s also Molly Burke (can’t remember if I spelt her surname correctly).

I don't know if this is helpful, but there's a popular Youtuber called Tommy Edison who's been totally blind since birth. He answers people's questions about how he perceives the world and how he does things like using a computer, cooking a meal, etc. Sometimes he has partially blind guests, so they can answer from both perspectives. It's a very fun series, but the comments are exhausting to read, so get ready for some bullshit there.

I also think that he stopped making videos last year, because of how terrible youtube has become lately.

It's always good to check out his videos tho, since they're nicely structured and enjoyable to watch.

I recently started making YouTube videos. I'm legally blind, lost my vision at 15. I have a friend and he makes gaming videos. He is legally blind too. Don't let your disability stop you from pursuing your dream.

Here's a speech I did recently. Maybe this will motivate you. $1

We’ve been YouTubing for 10 months (our six kids are all blind) and we’ve put up 124 videos. With almost a million views in our channel. The community is very supportive. I would encourage you to do it!

Would you be willing to come on for an interview on a podcast?

There are a ton of blind people on YouTube, with channels from gaming to cooking to social vlog style videos to tech stuff.

If you have unique ideas, I think it'd be great for you to make videos. If you're just gonna be another "This is my life as a blind person" youtuber, go ahead but I probably wouldn't watch it.

Thank you for your response, would you mind linking me some of those?

$1 and I really enjoy doing it. Video editing, graphics creation, etc can be hard at times (obviously) but I like that challenge. For reference, iMovie is really the only good option, whether it's on an iOS device or a mac, if you want an accessible video editor. I create my end-screens, etc in Keynote for mac as well, since it's really easy to set the position, rotation and almost all other properties of objects on the canvass with numbers or coordinates, which I can then, combined with what limited sight I have, visualise. But of course, you don't need all of that to start a YouTube channel, I just like doing it that way.

Sam from The Blind Life is pretty big on You Tube and I actually met him at an Accessible Technology conference in California recently. He is soooo nice and might have some advice if you reach out. Below is the link to his channel if you are interested.

Well, unfortunately I won’t be able to help you with the YouTube channel but I do have a podcast and it’s Hella fun!
Yes, on a YouTube video people will be able to see you and see your interaction with the camera but in a podcast you don’t have to worry about that type of stuff. Nowadays, you can actually monetize a podcast with the anchor app.
