Modifying a present for a blind 5 year old in Ecuador - help please? I want to do this in the best way for her. (self.Blind)
submitted by Starrcraters
I live in Ecuador and there are not a lot of resources here for the blind. A girl at my son's school is blind and her birthday party is tomorrow. So, I'm going a bit DIY on her present. I found a cool toy with sliding knobs that are color coded and are moved through a maze (mom approved). I want to add texture or braille to the parts for her. All red knobs would have the same texture and all yellow another texture, etc, but I'm not sure what is best.

I believe she is turning 6, but maybe 5. I've been told she has some delays and she might have autism. She's in my son's classroom for kids 3-5 year olds. Do you think it makes more sense to add different fabrics or sandpaper for the knobs or should I put braille numbers 1 -5 on different knobs (all 4 of the green knobs would have the number 1 on them, etc)? I'd have to use puffy paint to make the dots. What is better for this age group? If I did textures should they be things fairly similar like different grains of sandpaper or textures that are very different?

Thanks for the help!!!

Different fabrics work well. Sandpaper not as well, because it can get a bit damaging (to the skin) over time.

Use materials that are very different, because felt feels the same (for that age range, you want it very obvious). For example, velcro (the hook side and the loop side), plastic, paper.

If she knows braille, then braille numbers would be good. But she may not know braille, so putting dots to count may be easier (think of the pips of a dice).

You can make cookies with braille on it. If the kid likes sports, you can make a tactile map of the court.

I had a talking book with different texture panels that I adored. I think textures are better for this sort of thing.

Some ideas for different things: felt, wool, wood (grain or with varnish), cellophane, suede, faux fur, corrugated cardboard, and if you can find it, an extremely high grit sandpaper. The higher the grit, the less abrasive it is.

This is a really awesome idea. Thanks for doing this for her. :)

Thanks for the ideas!!! Next time I'm in the States I'll buy her something cool like the talking book. Then I'll be prepared for next year's birthday.

I'm trying to find a talking book with texture panels online. Could you give me the title of the one you liked?

Oof, you're testing my memory here. The book was something about animals and it came with a cassette tape. I can't remember much more than that I'm afraid. :(
