How can you find braille? (self.Blind)
submitted by onbird
I have never met anyone i felt comfortable asking this, but how do you find the braille text on all signs and bathroom doors? I have been trying to figure it out but I can't seem to find a pattern. Do they just place the anywhere and hope someone can point them out or do you just drag your hands against all walls to find them? This might seem ignorant but I have no idea.

there isn't any default configuration, unfortunately, but I've almost always found it somewhere near the door. I start out on the side of the doornob usually. Touch lightly though, can't tell you how many school posters I've managed to send sprawling. How you know it's time to run.

I think this is an issue that a lot of sighted people don't think about and we can definitely do better as a society. That being said, braille on signs reminds sighted people to be conscious of blind people, even if braille readers aren't reading the sign often (great example is the priority seats on subways--the braille on the little signs reminds young sighted people to give up their seat to a blind passenger, even though the sign language or picture doesn't specifically mention blind people)

I like this. I think you’re right. Education is paramount.

I work on a software tool for wayfinding designers (the people that design these signs). Depending on the laws in your country; there are some very strict specifications for sign placement. (Such as the the distance from the floor to the bottom of the sign, and the sign's distance from the door jam.) This placement may also depend on the primary purpose of the building; for example elementary schools may position signs lower on the wall, so that children can reach them. The idea of these guidelines is so that we all place our signs in the same position (relative to the door), so that it's easier to intuit.

$1. There's also all sorts of rules about contrast, font legibility and sizing.

I'm from Sweden but I guess we have something similar in place. At least I hope so

That seems hard. Sometimes when I see these signs they are so weirdly placed that I can't imagine any blind persone ever could find them

trust me I am blind and I often wish they were designed better so that all Braille was always at the same location. Usually I find it's fairly central to the door or wall, but that can vary.
