We went to Applebee's for lunch and the waitress brought the menu for my boyfriend. It has a large print menu in the front and Braille in the back. It was perfect. He used his app SeeingAI that reads the text to him. It's wonderful because a lot of the time he finds an item he likes and just orders it every time... This gives him more choices.

So one time I was at a restaurant with friends and I was reasonably sure they had had a Braille menu, so I politely requested it from the waitress and she says: "Braille, Braille? Is that the menu that has all the health diet food on it?"
"No, that's the one with all the little bumps." I say with perfect deadpan. My friends were a bit shocked that anyone from the 21st century would not know what Braille was.

Wow, SeeingAI?! I didn't know about this.

My husband is visually impaired and hasn't been able to drive or use a computer for the past few years, and can do very little reading. He didn't grow up visually impaired so this is new to us.

I just downloaded the app and it's amazing. He always takes pictures of labels and sends them to me to read. Now he can do this himself!

What else do I not know about?

There's an app called Be My Eyes that connects sighted volunteers with people who need sighted assistance through their cameras. Free. Android/iPhone.

Thanks so much! I'm usually his eyes but this is great for when I'm working!

Check out applevis.com. Lots of app reviews and discussions, it's pretty useful.
Also, this website is great since it lists the gestures, their uses, and the bluetooth keyboard shortcuts for all of them.

Thank you. Invaluable info.

It's an awesome app. He mostly used that one and Siri for everything else.
shortlivedlife2 points4y ago
Yes, he has google, siri, and alexa give him info all the time. I just didn't know about his app. He also has his iphone read to him with the two finger swipe down. That's about all we know though for general adaptive tech.

There’s voiceover, if you go to settings/general/accessibility/voiceover you can turn it on.
The best site to find out about apple accessibility is www.applevis.com

Don't forget about voiceover on Mac, and jaws and nvda on Windows

I didn’t know this was a thing! We go there a lot and I always have to read the menu aloud, this could be very helpful

I have had good luck with Olive Garden as well.

seeing AI is the bomb, I use it every day. Most commonly, I use it to read my mail and scan barcodes to get cooking directions for food.

I loved Applebee's for that too. They are so kind about it and good for them for actually having one.
