Does anyone here have bioptic glasses used for driving? (self.Blind)
submitted by marzskillz
Hello, I'm visually impaired and was wondering if anyone here used biopic glasses for driving. I want to get them, I would like to know how your process went and how did you pay for them.

I work for Ocutech - we make bioptics :) . Ours are the leading bioptics used for driving so feel free to ask me any questions. $1 The low vision specialist that I work for, Dr. Greene, was the first optometrist to be on the NC DMV medical review board and helped create the bioptic driving laws for our state. NC passed our law in 2014 and it has been a miracle for so many people that thought they couldn't drive. Every state is different though, but we have great contacts all over the US that can help with specific bioptic driving - let me know if I can help you in any way!

I'm currently in Arizona. I am trying to get insurance so I can get the first part started. I do have a question. Do I need to have a care with insurance under my name?

I am not sure whether the insurance has to be under your name, but I know that most of the time, the primary driver is also the insurance holder. Parents list their teenage drivers on the insurance policy all the time so I don't think it necessarily has to be in your name - don't quote me on that though, I am no expert on car insurance!

We have a patient in Scottsdale that got her license in 2015 - she blogged about here: $1

From what I understand the process can vary alot state to state. But here in ohio they had me go to OSU to have my eyes tested to see if I'd qualify. They tested stuff like my peripheral vision, my ability to distinguish colors etc. After that they sent me to the optometrist's office that ran the driving training to get all the info they needed to order the glasses. Luckily ohio has a bureau that helps people with disabilities and they paid for everything the glasses and the training wich was very expensive the glasses were 2500 and I'm not sure how much the training was but it was at the very least a couple thousand. So then I got my glasses and they put me on the waiting list for the training. I had to wait a while for the training because they only do it in the fall and winter but anyway I started it, it lasted 2 weeks i think we did a couple hours or so a day. Then I took the test and luckily I passed and I got my license how ever in ohio they only give you day time privliages for your first year and if you get any moving violations or at fault accidents in that year you cant get your night time privliages for another year. All said and done the process took about a year and probably somewhere around 7000 dollars and that's just for daytime you gotta do the whole thing over again for night time privilages. I know I left out alot I was trying not to write a book but if you have any more questions about it I'd be more than happy to answer them.
